As we learned in Season 1, Episode 12, “Turn, Turn, Turn,” Kyle and Guraish married when she was 18 and he was 23. She was pregnant at the time with daughter Farrah. The marriage was short lived, lasting only four years, and they divorced in 1990.
Little is known about Kyle’s first husband. In an interview with GeNYU, Farrah explained how she keeps in touch with her Indonesian father through text messages. On her birthday, Farrah’s dad sent her a message which read, “Straight to boogie and tequila.” Because he only speaks broken English and lives so far away, Farrah said this is the best method of communication, “I can send him a text message, and if it’s really late on his time, he can write me back when he gets up.”
Farrah’s father visited for her graduation from the University of Southern California, where she majored in psychology and minored in business. In her blog, Farrah discusses her parents’ divorce. Citing a study that described divorce as an intensely stressful experience for all children, Farrah countered the argument with her own anecdotal evidence. “From my own experience,” she wrote, “I do not recall any feelings of stress or vulnerability when my parents separated. I was two years old. It depends largely on how the parents decide to involve or even better, not to involve their children in the tangled environment of their divorce. Not all children will harness the same reaction,’” although she admits that “a smooth and friendly separation like that of my parents is a rarity.”
While it seems Farrah has a good, if distant, relationship with her father, it’s easy to see why she’s often mistaken for Mauricio’s own child. In response to a question about Farrah’s parentage, Kyle tweeted, “@Connielzn my daughter his step (though he doesn't like to call her that :-). Together since she is 5 years old.” With an excess of caring parents, it’s no wonder Farrah’s so well-adjusted.
