Is This Why Ali “Picked” Aria on Pretty Little Liars?

Earlier this week, we speculated about why Alison DiLaurentis (Sasha Pieterse) "picked" Aria (Lucy Hale), as she put it during Pretty Little Liars Season 3, Episode 16: "Misery Loves Company." Well, some eagled eyed fans — including a few of our awesome commenters — may have found the answer!

In this screencap of a page from Alison's journal that a fan tweeted at Marlene, Ali talks about Byron Montgomery's (Chad Lowe) affair with Meredith (Amanda Schull). She notes that "There's no way Aria tells her mom though ... Mr. Montgomery will talk her out of it, I just know it!"

Then, most notably: "She doesn't have the courage to stand up to him, that's why I picked..."

The last word in the sentence is obscured, but it could be "her." Is this Ali saying she picked Aria to be a friend because she's meek and easily cowed? Or perhaps she's suggesting she picked the Montgomeries to blackmail because she was sure Aria wouldn't mess up her plans?

And how does this relate to the scene in "Misery Loves Company?" Was she mocking Aria, saying she knows Aria can't stand up to her dad?
