Downton Abbey Season 3 Spoilers: Where Does Branson Go From Here?
Did you cry? Gasp? Rage? Are you still mad at Lord "I Keep Making Crap Decisions" Grantham and the insufferable Sir Philip for being so sure about Lady Sybil's diagnosis when they were ultimately wrong?
Downton Abbey Season 3 really gave us a heartbreaker on Sunday, killing off Lady Sybil due to complications from her pregnancy. (Note to all Downton Abbey actors: Stop leaving the show if you don't want your character to die in some horrible way!) The death of Sybil, along with the arrival of her baby girl, put her husband Tom Branson in an especially difficult position. The Irish lad — whom the Countess of Grantham still calls "the chauffeur" — was never very welcome in the family. And now he's on his own with a baby. Will he carry resentment for Robert (Lord Grantham) for insisting Sybil didn't need to go to the hospital?
"I think that's one of the challenges [Tom] faces,” actor Allen Leech, who plays Branson, told fans in an online chat (via Zap2it). “But Robert is also the reason he's not behind bars ... Tom is so unsure of everyone in the family and the only one who he truly knew and who truly knew him, he has just lost ... I think as much as he would like to go home [to Ireland, where he'd be arrested], it's too dangerous, but will the memory of Sybil be too much in that house? Wait and see."
We should also see some bonding between Branson and Matthew as, Leech says, "two outsiders who form a strong friendship based on not always understanding the ways of the house." He also teased that they start filming Season 4 in two weeks, so expect to see more Branson ... just not everyone currently on Season 3.
