Grey’s Anatomy Season 9 Cristina and Owen Spoilers: “We’re Not Headed to Any Fairy Tale Moment,” Says Shonda Rhimes
After agreeing to a divorce to ensure that Cristina (Sandra Oh) (and the rest of the plane crash survivors) could receive their much-deserved cash settlement, it seems like Owen (Kevin McKidd) and Cristina are almost happier as a divorced couple than they were as a married one! Sure, she may still be living in Alex’s (Justin Chambers) -- formerly Meredith’s (Ellen Pompeo) -- old house, but the pair do seem to be back on the right track to all things warm and fuzzy. So, Cristina and Owen fans can’t help but wonder: Does this newfound happiness mean that a return to the firehouse could be in order for the pair? Uh, don’t get your hopes up just yet. “I wouldn't say that there's hope for them returning to firehouse as a couple because I actually gave the word we could dismantle that set,” the show’s creator Shonda Rhimes recently told The Hollywood Reporter. But that doesn’t mean that things won’t continue to go well for Cristina and Owen — no matter what home (or homes) the two may live in. “But they are genuinely happy and their happiness doesn't necessarily mean that they need to be in the firehouse. The firehouse is a place of their past; a lot of painful things happened there,” Shonda explains. In her interview with THR, Shonda also explains that Owen and Cristina are on “a complex journey,” due to their differing opinions on kids, work, and family. And with the new girl, Dr. Cahill (Constance Zimmer) shaking things up for Chief Hunt in the aftermath of the crash and multi-million dollar payout, Owen and Cristina will definitely have their challenges cut out for them. “I've never been interested in telling story like a fairy tale," Shonda says. "We're not headed to any fairy tale moment. But I do think that this is a couple that is going to struggle to figure out ways to remain in love." Phew! To see what happens next in Cristina and Owen’s not-so-fairytale love story, catch the next all-new episode of Grey’s Anatomy on Thursday, January 31, 2013, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
