Naomi Campbell Wants The Face to Get Models Back on Magazine Covers in New Supermodel Era
Next time you stop at a newsstand, check out who is on the beauty and style magazine covers.
Nowadays, it's usually a famous actress or singer. Time was, that spot was reserved for top models. Having models who did print, like that, and walked runway created the world of famous "supermodels." Naomi Campbell would like that '80s and '90s world revived, and she's taking a step toward it with her new model search show, The Face, which premieres Tuesday, February 12 at 9 p.m. on Oxygen.
“Of course, we want the magazine covers back," Naomi told Celebuzz. "Of course, we do. There are less covers for the girls out there who are the new, young, trendy girls. She’s got more to compete with and there are only a certain amount of covers they’re going to give a model a year. Before, you had models twelve months a year.”
Naomi made a point to say she wouldn't candy-coat anything for the models on The Face, because she and the coaches wouldn't be there holding their hands out in the real world. But that's one criticism that's fallen on America's Next Top Model — that they create a "top model" but then don't support them enough in the real world.
The Face has a chance to establish credibility, since it didn't have to suffer through the early reality TV years like ANTM. In the beginning, Nigel Barker admitted, people wouldn't hire him because he was on a reality TV show like ANTM. Now he's on The Face and reality TV has become more acceptable to the industry.
Are you still thinking about watching The Face or have you decided one way or the other whether you’ll tune in or tune out?
