Colton Dixon Talks About His Just-Dropped Debut Album and Offers a Season 12 Spoiler
If idle hands truly are the devil’s playground, Colton Dixon is in the clear. The 7th place contender of American Idol season 11 has been busy at work since his run on the show, and is the only other person to release a debut album besides the winner Phillip Phillips.
Colton is used to setting himself apart, however, as he was also the only Idol alum to ever sing an original song while on the American Idols Live! Tour.
To call Colton a writing fool is an understatement. He didn’t let a minute go by after being eliminated before he began to pen his songs. As he told USA Today, “The first couple weeks, I wrote 13 songs in 13 days, literally getting every idea that I had on the show on paper. It was great to already have enough for an album after two weeks. I was like, ‘I’ll have over a hundred songs!’ But then the tour came along, and there was no time.”
The Tennessee native understood the importance of using the AmericanIdol momentum. “It’s important to capitalize on it, milk it for all its worth,” he said. “Even if that’s just writing with someone you’ve always wanted to write with.” Case in point -- Lifehouse’s Jason Wade suggested the two write together and, although the songs didn’t make the album, A Messenger, Colton is glad he took the opportunity when it arose.
Not only did Colton’s album just drop today, but he’s headed out on the road with Christian band Third Day. The future's looking bright for the earnest singer, who seems to always have a smile on his face.
And what of his sister, Schyler, who is the reason the successful singer is where he is today? As you’ll recall, Colton wasn’t even auditioning for season 11, but when his sister went to try out, he was coaxed by the judges into doing so as well. Colton gave us a hint of a spoiler, saying, “She’ll be in Hollywood this year. It gets interesting -- that’s all I’m going to say. It gets real interesting.”
