Gomer Pyle Actor Jim Nabors, 82, Marries Partner of 38 Years
Break out your best Andy Griffith Show whistle for this happy news!
According to Hawaii News Now, Jim Nabors — famous for playing "dim-witted" Gomer Pyle — married 64-year-old Stan Cadwallader on January 15 in Seattle. Gay marriage became legal in Washington State in December.
This is a “coming out” of sorts for Jim, who never publicly acknowledged his sexual preference, although he said he never hid it from anyone, even in the 1960s when his Andy Griffith spinoff, Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., was a hit. "I'm 82 and he's in his 60s and so we've been together for 38 years, and I'm not ashamed of people knowing, it's just that it was such a personal thing I didn't tell anybody," Jim told Hawaii News Now. "I'm very happy that I've had a partner of 38 years and I feel very blessed. And what can I tell you, I'm just very happy."
Jim said he met his new spouse in 1975 when Stan was a Honolulu firefighter; he eventually went to work for the actor and they began a relationship. "This is really no big deal. My friend and I, my partner, we went through all of this 38 years ago,” Jim said. “So, I mean, we made our vows and that was it. It was to each other, but nevertheless, we were a couple.”
And now they are a happily wed couple. May they enjoy many more years together!
