Hospital Allows Dog Into Delivery Room, Now Staff Is Barking Mad

In Bristol, England, a woman was granted permission to bring her certified therapy dog, a Labrador named Barney, into the delivery room while she gave birth. According to the mom-to-be, she needed the dog around to calm her anxiety.

Now, we would prefer a Xanax, but since that’s a birthing no-no, a dog may have helped considerably!

In the meantime, some people — clearly, non-dog-lovers — think that hospitals are going to the dogs. As a source for The Sun says, “Nurses and doctors were appalled…This is the first time any of the hospital’s staff can remember such a thing happening. They’re now worried that other women will be allowed to do the same because a precedent has been set.”

Okay, we can see the point about a precedence being set. But if they’re worried about cleanliness, they should know that the woman received advanced permission from infection control experts and a thorough cleaning was done afterwards. If you trust a hospital to sterilize a room post-delivery, you can probably trust them to clean up after Fido, right?

To be honest, we believe the whole thing about dogs being cleaner than humans, so for the most part, we’re cool with this. However we’re not sure we’d want to spend time at a hospital with dogs sniffing around our room, but if someone wants to keep theirs in their private room, we say, go for it!

So how about you? Should (wo)man’s best friend be allowed in the hospital in special cases, or should he stay at home? Tell us below in the comments!
