American Idol

American Idol Ratings Top Wednesday But Fall to Big Bang Theory on Thursday

American Idol ratings were split this week for the final two Season 12 audition shows. The hit FOX show remaining on top for Wednesday night’s show, while losing out by a pretty large margin to the CBS sitcom Big Bang Theory on Thursday night. Here’s how it broke down:

Idol stayed even with its adults ages 18-49 ratings from the week before (with a slight dip), drawing 15.6 million viewers and a 9.1 rating/14 share among households in primetime. CBS followed with a distant second by airing “Super Bowl’s Greatest Commercials” in the 8pm time slot (8.1 million viewers). With 5.6 million viewers, NBC edged out ABC (4.8 million viewers) with shows like Law & Order: SVU and Chicago Fire. The CW came in last with 2.6 million viewers.

Known as a ratings juggernaut, American Idol got a taste of its own medicine on its second night of audition shows this week. As put it, CBS’ Big Bang Theory “crushed” Idol in all ratings measures. Among the target audience of adults ages 18-49, CBS averaged a 3.4 rating and 14.01 million viewers while FOX saw a 3.3 rating and 9.63 million viewers. Although they still lost out to ABC, NBC saw a bit of a bump with its 30 Rock series finale, giving them an overall 2.6/4 rating and 4.05 million viewers.

What’s the takeaway from the numbers? American Idol is no longer the only gig in town but, let’s face it -- most networks would still kill for those ratings.

What do you think of this season of Idol thus far?
