Downton Abbey Cast on Once Upon a Time? Casting the Crawleys as Fairy Tale Characters
Everyone knows that fairy tale land should be populated with British accents, which makes Downton Abbeyactress Lesley Nicol’s (she plays Mrs. Patmore in the British period drama) upcoming turn in Once Upon a Time all the more fitting. But why stop there? There’s a whole host of British accents to choose from on Downton Abbey. We’re here to tell you which Downton actors we think should make an appearance in the Enchanted Forest and which characters they should play.
Michelle Dockery Michelle Dockery plays Lady Mary Crawley on Downton with nuance and finesse. She’s an unfeeling (if not witty) ice queen one minute and a considerate sister, wife, or daughter the next. We’re pretty confident Michelle could rock just about any role, but we think Michelle’s no-nonsense yet compassionate demeanour would make for a perfect Mary Poppins. OUAT Executive producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz already told Entertainment Weekly they would consider a Mary Poppins character, so all we need now is the perfect actress to fill the role. We think Michelle would hold the umbrella nicely.
Dan Stevens And what about Michelle’s on-screen hubby, Dan Stevens? Well, given his surname and golden locks we think Dan is well-suited as John Smith of Pocahontas fame. We weren’t sure about characters based on historical figures, but given Mulan’s (Jamie Chung) appearance earlier this season, we think Pocahontas could fit right in. Dan may have to lose the British accent for the role, but as long as he brings those baby blues, we’ll let it slide.
Hugh Bonneville As for Crawley patriarch Lord Grantham played by Hugh Bonneville, we think Hugh would make a superb Wizard of Oz. There’s already been mention of the Wizard on the show, and Horowitz and Kitsis said in the same Entertainment Weekly article that the character has been part of the plan since the beginning.
“We’ve been talking about Oz since Day 1,” said Kitsis. “Look at the pilot. One of the pages of Henry’s book shows flying monkeys. And in Jefferson’s hat there seemed to be an emerald curtain.”
We’re casting our vote for Hugh for Wizard of the Emerald City!
Rose hasn’t been seen sweeping the Downton corridors since her character, Gwen, went off to be a secretary at the end of season 1, but we couldn’t let that red mane go to waste! These days she is busy playing Ygritte on Game of Thrones, but we think she’d make a lovely Ariel.
OUAT showrunners have mentioned before that they will be introducing the Little Mermaid sooner rather than later, and given Rumplestiltskin’s (Robert Carlyle) recent mermaid mention, we think it could be soon. And it turns out Rose grew up in a castle in real life, so we think she would fit right in as a OUAT princess!
As for the rest of the cast, we’re all for making any “upstairs” actors into Aristocats and “downstairs” actors into the mice from Cinderella (Cinderella is going to need more mice after Gus got torn to pieces by Cora in Season 2, Episode 7: “Child of the Moon”).
What do you think? Which Downton Abbey cast members do you want to see make the jump across the pond, and which characters do you want to see them play? Sound off with your ideas below!
