August hasn’t been seen in Storybrooke since the season 1 finale when he managed to slip away despite having recently turned completely into wood. Viewers have seen him more recently (and more flexible) in flashback form in Season 2, Episode 6: “Tallahassee.”
The episode focused on the story of when Emma (Jennifer Morrison) first met and fell in love with Henry’s father, Neal (Michael Raymond-James). The two were planning to settle down together before August stepped in, showing Neal something in a mysterious wooden box to convince him that he had to let Emma go so she could complete her destiny.
August and Emma were the only two to escape the spell that Regina (Lana Parrilla) cast trapping all the Enchanted Forest inhabitants in Storybrooke. They were sent through to our world in a magical wardrobe constructed by Geppetto (Tony Amendola). Geppetto made Pinocchio promise to take care of Emma, but August ends up abandoning Emma at the orphanage they are both taken to when they come over to this world. August finds Emma years later when she is in Storybrooke, but doesn’t manage to convince her of her destiny, therefore failing in the promise he made to his father and turning back into wood.
We have seen no sign of August in the third season, but we can assume he is alive and able to send postcards, as he was presumably the one to send one to Neal in Season 2, Episode 1: “Broken,” letting him know that Emma has succeeded in her destiny to free the people of Storybrooke. Geppetto was also seen frantically searching for his son in the same episode, to no avail.
