American Idol 2013 Spoilers: The Ladies Go to Hollywood! (UPDATE)
As American Idol 2013 Executive Producer Nigel Lythgoe announced in his preseason media call, there have been some changes to Hollywood Week this season. For the first time ever, the show is giving an entire week to the guys and an entire week to the girls in order to focus more on the talent. Good -- everyone knows boys have cooties, right? Some of the secrets behind the Idol Curtain will likely remain locked up tight until it airs on TV, but we’ve been able to glean a few American Idol Hollywood Week spoilers here and there. The Idol Pad seems to have its moles (they’d tell us but they’d have to kill us), and here are a few interesting tidbits about what to expect from the ladies' Hollywood Week rounds: Angela Miller, who played the piano for her performance, was the only hopeful to get a standing ovation from all four judges for her solo. And discerning judge Nicki Minaj gave Melinda Ademi (whose moving backstory was revealed during season 11) a standing O as well. Song choices in our American Idol Hollywood Week spoilers run the gamut, with some old favorites, like Ray Charles’ “Georgia On My Mind” (made famous by Adam Brock during Hollywood Week last year) and “Go Your Own Way” by Fleetwood Mac. But there were plenty of newer songs for those who prefer a more contemporary style. Just to name a few, there was the uber popular tween hit “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen, “A Thousand Years” by Christina Perri, and “Locked Out Of Heaven” by Bruno Mars. The wide variety of approved modern ditties will certainly give this year’s Hollywood Week a different vibe. Now this is where it gets really intriguing -- The Idol Pad was even able to dig up some of the song choices by actual American Idol 2013 contestants. Remember Stephanie Schimel -- she who had the nerve to actually wear the same shade of eyeshadow as Nicki Minaj, causing World War III among the judges? Yeah, well she sang Phillip Phillips’ hit coronation song, “Home.” One hopeful even dared to take on a song by Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. Shubha Vedula, another gal who was featured in our spoiler series, took on “When You Believe” by the two musical icons. These folks are nothing if not courageous.
At the end of this second round of Hollywood Week, the girls will be cut down to a Top 20. The male contestants, who are currently still at 28, will also be narrowed down to a Top 20 guys. From what we're seeing in the spoilers, there might be some guys who have to perform again to guarantee their spot in the Top 40.
