Mindy McCready: Fifth Celebrity Rehab Cast Member to Die in Two Years
In September 2012, The Daily Beast wrote an article questioning the effectiveness of Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew when it comes to treating people with alcoholism and substance abuse addictions.
"In the past 18 months, four of the past 43 participants in VH1’s Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew have died from either drug use or illnesses related to their drug addictions," they wrote. "The tragic roster includes Alice in Chains’ bassist Mike Starr, 44, actor Jeff Conaway, 60, police brutality victim Rodney King, 47, and reality TV star Joey Kovar, 29."
Unfortunately, one more Celebrity Rehab veteran has also passed away: Mindy McCready, 37, who was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Sunday, February 17. She is the third cast member from her season to die, after Mike and Joey.
It makes for an alarming statistic, but there's always more to a story than a list of names — and with Mindy there were a lot of other things going on, besides her history of substance abuse and mental health issues. Her "soul mate" had just died a month before, and she was facing questions about his death. When you're already in a fragile state, outside factors that would devastate anyone can have an even more crippling effect. But some people on the show have managed to turn their lives around, and even though five have died in two years, many others are still fighting the good fight.
“Once in a while the disease wins,” Dr. John Sharp, Rehab With Dr. Drew's on-call psychiatrist, told The Daily Beast last year. “And it’s really not infrequent. It makes me sad. It makes me angry. It makes me glad that I’m in the healing profession all at once."
