Once Upon a Time: Is Baelfire/Neal a Fairytale Character?

Warning: This article contains BIG spoilers for OUAT Season 2, Episode 14: "Manhattan."

As we learned in Once Upon a Time Season 2, Episode 14: "Manhattan" Rumplestiltskin's (Robert Carlyle) son Baelfire is also Neal, Henry's (Jared Gilmore) father. That makes him a central figure in the OUAT story but, as of yet, he's not been identified as a recognizable fairy tale character.

Of course, Neal doesn't have to be a fairy tale character. Emma (Jennifer Morrison) and Henry aren't. However, in the Canadian promo for Season 2, Episode 15: "The Queen Is Dead," Neal confesses that our world isn't the first he came to. "If it was, I'd be a couple of hundred years old by now."

That immediately set wheels turning in our heads. If Nealfire has been to other realms, it's possible that he could still be part of a fairy tale we know. After all, Rumple is also The Beast and Hook's (Colin O’Donoghue) crocodile. Why shouldn't Nealfire play triple duty, too? Like father, like son, right?

But who else might he be? There are a couple of common theories that we like.

Peter Pan: In the preview, Nealfire also says he knows Hook, and it's a "long story." Peter Pan is Hook's enemy, so that would fit. Plus, Nealfire being Peter makes sense in other ways. If he's actually lived for hundreds of years, he must have found a way to stay young. So far, Neverland is the only world we know of where you don't age.

It would certainly be ironic and interesting if Hook's biggest nemesis in Neverland turned out to be the son of his biggest nemesis in Fairytale Land. On the other hand, we aren't supposed to meet Peter Pan this season, which makes this theory less likely.

A Lost Boy: Of course, Nealfire doesn't have to be the head honcho for the general principles behind the Peter Pan theory to stay true. Maybe he was one of Peter Pan's Lost Boys. In that case, Peter himself could still be held for a different season.

The White Rabbit. Other fans favor the theory that Nealfire is the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland, based on the sign about hatters he has in his room. We do know that Hook went to Wonderland at one point (to see Cora [Barbara Hershey]), so that could work, too.

What do you think Nealfire's history in other worlds is? Share your theories in the comments below.
