Host Ryan Seacrest opens the show with a dramatic spiel about how this is the first time we’ve ever had ‘sudden death’ rounds with the Top 40. While they are kind of overdoing it with the whole twist thing, I have to admit, it’s cool each of the contestants will really get to be seen and heard by the viewers. Randy Jackson explains that if there is a tie between the judges over whether someone should go through to the Top 20 or not, Jimmy Iovine will cast the tiebreaker vote.
Ryan announces the 10 ladies who will be performing tonight are:
Jenny Beth Willis
The first contestant going in front of the American Idol judges and the live audience is country singer Jenny Beth Willis.
American Idol 2013 Top 40 Performance: Jenny Beth Willis - “Heaven, Heartache and the Power of Love” by Trisha Yearwood
Continuing our American Idol recap for Las Vegas round 1, up next we have Kree Harrison taking the stage with hope in her heart for a chance to make the Top 20 tonight.
American Idol 2013 Top 40 Performance: Kree Harrison - "Up to the Mountain" by Patty Griffin
Right away you can hear this performance is just not going to go all that well. Keith Urban kindly says it was a good start to the show and he enjoyed her confidence and range. Nicki Minaj thinks Jenny could have had more fun with the song and the audience was more excited about the performance than the singer. Randy Jackson points out that Jenny Beth was out of sync with the band and she was "jerky" and not at her best. Mariah Carey says it was a nice performance (ouch) but Jenny Beth needed to be more dynamic.
American Idol 2013 Top 40 Performance: Tenna Torres - "Soulmate" by Natasha Bedingfield
Kree says she is influenced by Otis Redding and Stevie Ray Vaughn, thanks to her parents. With those kinds of influences, you're hoping Kree will be fabulous... and she is! Kree picked a fabulous song for her voice and the judges are very impressed. Keith and Nicki both give her a standing ovation. Keith thinks she is a natural and Kree could sing all kinds of styles of country music. Nicki thinks the other girls in the competition should be afraid of this one. She says Kree is very sexy even totally dressed from head to toe and she knows how to make love to a song.
American Idol 2013 Top 40 Performance: Angela Miller - "Nobody's Perfect" by Jessie J
Right now Angela Miller is our current early favorite to win and the leader on our Power Rankings for the Top 20 girls. We have high hopes for this performance and... thankfully we do not have them crushed! Although this performance isn't quite as awesome as her original song last week, it is still the best of the night in our opinion. She is so comfortable and connected, you can just feel the song reaching right through the screen. Keith seems almost at a loss about what to say, other than it is fabulous. Nicki says there was no way Angela could have topped her performance from last week and it was the best thing she's seen so far on Idol. She's a contender. Randy says she is one of the girls to beat this season so far. Mariah wants everyone to hear Angela's original song from last week because it was so amazing and she has huge talent.
American Idol 2013 Top 40 Performance: Isabelle Pasqualone - "God Bless the Child" by Billie Holiday
This performance is a bit weak as well, although better than Jenny Beth. Keith says it is a really big song to tackle and that he liked the end. Nicki says she is still in love with her voice and she thought the song choice was great. She says Tenna needs to chop off the hair though. Randy says this is the real start to the night (which is kind of mean to Jenny Beth) and Mariah thinks Tenna really gave the song her emotional all.
American Idol 2013 Top 40 Performance: Adriana Latonio - "Ain't No Way" by Aretha Franklin
Isabelle talks about how she had a hard time when she was young because she was really overweight. She says the hard experiences when she was young helped her to grow strong. When she starts off her song tonight, however, she's very weak. She really struggles with it in the beginning, but eventually gets a handle on it. Although she finishes well, her difficulty in launching the song could hurt her badly. Keith says Isabelle's song should be revenge against all the boys who wouldn't ask her out when she was young. Nicki loved it all over the place. Randy says he would have liked to hear a more contemporary song. Mariah says she loved the song choice and the vocals. I think the judges are being overly generous and not pointing out how really, really rough the start of the song was.
American Idol 2013 Top 40 Performance: Amber Holcomb - "My Funny Valentine" by Frank Sinatra
Doing an Aretha Franklin song in front of the American Idol judges is a very bold move. Many have tried... and many have failed badly. Only a few contestants have managed to do Aretha justice over the years on Idol. Amazingly enough, it looks like Adriana Latonio is going to be one of them! She sweeps away the girls who have gone before her and delivers a truly stellar performance. She even gets Mariah Carey humming along! Adriana gets a standing ovation from the judges and I think it is safe to say, she'll be going through to the Top 20. Keith says it was really good. Nicki says Adriana may be tiny, but she is a pro at commanding the stage. Randy loved it and Mariah says she is really proud of Adriana for taking on an Aretha song.
American Idol 2013 Top 40 Performance: Brandy Hotard - "Anymore" by Travis Tritt
Amber starts shaky but finishes very nicely in the end. Keith says she has really made it hard on the judges. She really showed how timeless the song is. Nicki thought it was a great vocal but worries the audience won't see her "shine" through the TV. Randy says he loved her runs and the ending of the song. Mariah feels like she needs to smack Amber because her vocals were so good.
Now it's time for the judges to deliberate and make their final choices on who will go home and who will move on to the Top 20!
And here is the final list of which ladies will move on to the American Idol Season 12 Top 20!
Brandy says she has been trying out for American Idol since she was sixteen. She has a lovely country voice, but I feel we have heard better country singers in this competition. Overall it is just not an exciting performance in the least. Keith is nice in his critique, but you can tell he isn't thrilled. He thinks she really didn't connect emotionally with the song. Nicki agrees and thought it was odd Brandy smiled through such a sad song. Randy thinks Brandy is probably in trouble; he just didn't feel it. Mariah thinks Brandy has a nice voice and feels the performance was better than the other judges are saying. She would like to hear Brandy sing some classics and thinks she looks great too.
American Idol 2013 Top 40 Performance: Shubha Vedula - "Born This Way" by Lady Gaga
Shubha decides to take to the piano for her performance and that's cool, but the arrangement of "Born This Way" she sings is not. Keith thinks she crammed too much into the song, but he's nice overall about her rendition. Nicki jokes the audience can boo her as well as Keith (which they did) because she thinks Shubha overdid it too. She throws in a comment about it being some kind of "Gangnam Style" mashup. Randy says he did like parts of the song, but there were too many runs. He thinks it would have been better if she stayed at the piano the whole time. He thinks she has potential. Mariah kind of goes with the flow on this one, mostly agreeing it was good... just not great.
American Idol 2013 Top 40 Performance: Kamaria Ousley - "Mr. Know It All" by Kelly Clarkson
There isn't a lot to say about this performance other than expressing a firm belief this will be the last performance from Kamaria on American Idol 2013. In one word, it was terrible. Keith says it was a bad song choice and there was no emotion in it. Nicki says her twang did not work, but she looked nice (the kiss of death). Randy says the song never got going and it was her worst performance yet. Mariah says Kamaria is adorable and looks great... which means, it is over girl. No Top 20 for you.
