American Idol Judges: Who Is the Best Season 12 Judge?
Sure, everyone tunes in to American Idol 2013 to hear the amazing vocalists. But the voices were especially enjoying this season are the ones coming from the American Idol judges table. Now that we’ve all gotten a taste of this year’s four judging personalities, here’s our take on how each one has been so far. We can’t wait for the rest of the season, dahlings! The Crazy: Nicki Minaj Yes, Nicki — you can call us “Bunny” if you want. And Nicki’s oddball nickname choices (which are more random than the ones in Reservoir Dogs) are just one reason why this hilarious newbie is such a breath of fresh — not to mention occasionally British-inflected — air.
Nicki completely reinvents what we’ve come to expect in a judge, between loving performances in which someone completely forgets the words (previously an American Idol no-no) to championing the Papa Peachez types of the world. We also love that she sometimes finds bad performances to be a personal affront. Our message to Nicki: Don’t ever change, dahling.
The Diva: Mariah Carey Mariah knows what she likes, too, and she definitely has an affinity for the big-voiced divas (which makes sense). We wouldn’t call her necessarily nurturing, but she’s definitely nurturing-esque, although she’s not afraid of a good old-fashioned eyeroll either. And we love that Mariah doesn’t take crap from the other judges — not that we would have expected her to.
The Dawg: Randy Jackson Randy makes sure his voice is heard, which is fitting from the elder statesman. The Dawg is not afraid to let everyone know what he thinks — as he is the most likely to tell someone to give up on their music dreams (ouch!) — but he’s also shown a willingness to be flexible and change his vote. And in music competitions, as in gymnastics, a little flexibility is always appreciated.
The Sweetheart: Keith Urban Yes, Keith is one sexy dude, so that’s no surprise. But what is a surprise is just how lovable he is. He’s certainly not a pushover, but his comments are thoughtful and surprisingly witty. If you’re a country singer on Idol, Keith is in your corner, but he also seems to have an interest in various genres. Also, we now know three words to never use around him: The. Country. Thing.
