Yahoo! CEO Bans Employees From Working From Home: What Does This Mean For Moms?
Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer recently announced a change to the company that will make it mandatory for all employees to work from the office rather than from home, according toBusiness Insider.
It seems as though the very successful female executive, who gave birth to her first child in September 2012, was trying to unite the company under one roof, but instead ended up angering faithful employees in the process. Some of these employees have long-standing arrangements to work from home one or two days a week, or special arrangements for scheduling due to childcare and other family-related responsibilities. This new mandate essentially bulldozes these arrangements, stating that employees should “comply without exception or quit."
“Some of the best decisions and insights come from hallway and cafeteria discussions, meeting new people, and impromptu team meetings,” says the memo sent out by Yahoo! HR head Jackie Reses. “Speed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home. We need to be one Yahoo!, and that starts with physically being together.” All of this comes from a new mother who paid out-of-pocket to have a nursery installed next to her office, according to The Cut. Does she expect other working parents to create such havens for their kids in the workplace? Marissa obviously feels strongly about the need for employees to be in the workplace to get the best out of them, but since she is no longer affected by her own mandate, is she turning a blind eye to other working parents’ needs? As a source for Business Insider notes, Marissa’s intentions may be to use this opportunity to effectively cut the fat without instituting a layoff, forcing their large number of remote employees who weren’t productive to leave the company.
