Andrew Jenks Talks “Adventures as a Young Filmmaker”: “I’m Sitting There Narrating Grass” — Exclusive
Fans of MTV’s World of Jenks know young filmmaker Andrew Jenks as the man behind the camera, but now, the 26-year-old can add author to his growing resume. Andrew put down the camera and picked up a computer to write his autobiography, Andrew Jenks: My Adventures as a Young Filmmaker. Wetpaint Entertainment got the scoop from Andrew on his latest endeavor while he was promoting Season 2 of his MTV hit, World of Jenks.
The book, which hits shelves on Friday, March 1, is a collection of personal stories and photographs from the influences of his family and living abroad, to attending New York University (and subsequently dropping out) and becoming a filmmaker. However, Andrew wasn’t sold on the idea at first.
“I was 25 at the time, and I wasn’t sure that I wanted to write a book about myself,” Andrew said. “But it ended up being the best therapy that one could ever imagine.”
It seems fitting that Andrew, who captures interesting lives for a living, would have a unique upbringing himself.
“When you read it, it goes from when I was a little kid travelling around with my parents in Nepal and Belgium, filming on a big, bulky VHS camera, to having a public access show in high school that got cancelled because I gave a bad review to the local pizza place, to going to NYU and dropping out, and to moving into a nursing how for 7 months. It’s cool because there are all of these fun stories that are impossible to capture in the limited time you have for a movie or TV show.”
From his worldly travels -- “In Japan, we followed around Bobby Valentine, the most famous guy in the country,” he said -- to the mundane, Andrew, camera in hand, documented everything.
“I was going through old footage, and I found this one tape -- and it’s an hour long -- and it’s just grass -- a shot of grass on a lawn. In the background I hear, ‘This Andrew Jenks reporting live for CNN. I am right now following the latest type of grass that is growing, here, on the lawn,’” he recalled. “For 30 minutes, I’m sitting there narrating grass.”
“We were always travelling, and sometimes we were in places where people didn’t speak English,” Andrew added. “So by default, I found that the camera was my best friend.”
Andrew Jenks: My Adventures as a Young Filmmaker hits shelves Friday, March 1. World of Jenks Season 2 premieres Monday, March 4 at 11 p.m. ET on MTV.
