Terry McDermott Wrote and Released a No. 1 Hit in Under One Week! — Exclusive
Scottish rocker Terry McDermott may have placed second on The Voice Season 3, but he’s the show’s first contestant to release a No. 1 single on iTunes after the show’s wrapped.
Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with the former Team Blake singer while he was in the midst of celebrating his No. 1 spot on the iTunes rock chart with his latest single, “Pictures.” The most shocking thing about the song? It was written and released in less than one week!
“The incredible thing is that the single was actually written last Wednesday [Feb. 20],” Terry told us. “Me and my co-writer got together in L.A. and wrote the track kinda with the notion that it was a good song. We put it up on SoundCloud. It got 26,000 plays within 24 hours and we knew we were onto something.”
Terry and his co-writer left the studio after recording, mixing, and mastering “Pictures” on Monday, Feb. 25, and talked to a friend at TuneCore about getting the song on iTunes. The friend put the song on iTunes that night, and with the help of Twitter and Facebook, Terry was able to boost the single’s rank at a rapid pace.
“The landscape of music has changed completely, it’s almost unrecognizable,” Terry said. “I think social media is absolutely key in bringing music to people. I think that what we’ve managed to achieve in the last week shows that there’s more than one way to skin a cat.”
The husband and father also admits that not winning show and being signed to a record label allowed him to quickly release the tune and not get “bogged down in bureaucracy.”
