Downton Abbey Season 4 Spoilers: “Very Exciting” Things For Branson, Change For Edith

There’s a looooong wait ahead of us until Downton Abbey Season 4 premieres in the U.S. (PBS reportedly plans to start in January again ... but we're hoping they feel pressured to air it in the fall, like in the U.K.!)

Allen Leech (Tom Branson) and Laura Carmichael (Lady Edith) talked to Red Carpet News about how things are going so far, and Allen apologized to fans for making us wait, but added that it would be worth it.

Allen said they were a few weeks into production (although filming itself is reported to start in late March), and he talked about how Matthew’s death would be a key part of the Season 4 story. “I think Mary’s journey is going to be pretty essential to it,” the Irish actor said (via Hypable). “She’s trying to get over the death of her husband and that’s a very central arc to it… Downton is in a period of change, as it always is, and that’s pretty integral again to the family trying to cope with the changes that come with the ’20s.”

What about Branson? Anything specific going on with the character that he's excited about? "There are a couple of things I can’t really talk about," the Irish actor said. “But yeah, definitely toward the middle of the series it gets very exciting." Nice.

Laura added that the show will be “moving on through the ’20s, so it’s more glamour and more like you’d expect.” So … flappers and jazz and stuff? Maybe, since we’re going to see a six-month time jump and the show is casting a club singer.

What about Lady Edith? What’s going on with her? “I’m having a great time, it’s a really interesting change for her,” Laura said. “It sort of carries on being fascinating, I hope.” Laura previously told the Lancashire Evening Post that Edith is going to get feisty on Season 4. “She’s coming into her own a little bit,” Laura said. “I think after being jilted she’s thrown it all out the window, any ideas she did have in the first place and I think that’s been good for her. It’s given her a bit of independence and hotspur. I love playing her.”

We love watching her! Read the links below for more spoilers and teases on Season 4.
