Pretty Little Liars Season 4 Spoiler: Hitchcock Homage Revealed!
The Pretty Little Liarswriters sure do love their Hitchcock! The Season 1 finale saw Ian falling to his death from a bell tower a la Vertigo. The Season 2 finale referenced the uber famous Psycho shower scene, as well as giving viewers a Bates Motel-esque vibe. Showrunner Marlene King has already said the Season 3 finale will pay homage to North by Northwest, and now she’s revealed which Hitchcock classic PLL will tackle in Season 4... The Birds! It’s one of our favorite creepy classics. As a lover of black-and-white films, we think Aria would definitely approve (unless she’s the one who gets peck-attacked). An eager PLL fan recently tweeted at Marlene to ask if she had seen the Hitchcock classic. “Oh yes,” Marlene (fittingly) tweeted back. “Homage to the film in PLL season 4.”
We’re not sure what a PLL homage to The Birds would look like. The avian horror is not as easily referenced as some of Hitchcock’s more suspense-driven flicks, but we’re intrigued nonetheless. The most famous of the film’s scenes is the one in which the film’s protagonist runs into a phone booth to escape the murderous birds. She watches the horror unfold from the booth, temporarily trapped by the pesky birds and the flames surrounding her.
This classic scene already reminds us a bit of the recent Pretty Little Liars in which Spencer was trapped in her steam room, but we’re thinking the reference will be even more literal than that. Will one of the Liars be trapped in a phone booth, helpless to prevent a horror happening just on the other side of the glass? Perhaps it could even relate to the hints about a fire in the Season 3 finale.
Our alternate theory is that one of the Liars will develop an Angry Birds addiction (we think it will be Hanna). Because, really, what kind of self-respecting town has a phone booth anymore?
