Glee Season 5: Why Hasn’t Fox Renewed It Yet?

UPDATE: Fox has now officially renewed Glee for both Seasons 5 and 6!

What’s with all the suspense, Fox?!
Glee is nearing the end of its fourth season, yet there’s no word yet on whether the network will order a fifth. Will there be a Glee Season 4, or is our favorite musical dramedy headed for the sunset?

We know it’s worrying, with Fox having renewed all but two of its scripted shows — especially when the other show up in the air, Touch, is almost certainly headed for cancellation, according to TV By The Numbers. But we wouldn’t fret too much. TV By The Numbers also says that Glee is almost certain to be renewed. So why the delay?

There are no definite answers, but from the looks of things, Fox may be looking for creator Ryan Murphy to take the show in a new direction (pun so intended). As Ryan told TV Guide at PaleyFest, “I actually have a meeting [Thursday] at 11 where I have to pitch out not only the end of this year but the next year.”

Earlier this year, Fox Entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly heavily suggested that he thinks it might be a good idea to move the show to take place exclusively in New York. Since he’s the big boss, it’s very possible that Ryan may have to either demonstrate how keeping the show in both locations could still prove compelling, or how he can make a transition to an all-NYC storyline without leaving a lot of loose ends.

There’s also the boring business of contracts. With the show exiting its fourth year, a lot of the main stars are likely up for contract renegotiations. If certain stars — such as Lea Michele (Rachel) — decided not to return, it would put a huge damper on the show’s future.

But if Ryan Murphy has a concept going forward that Fox can feel good about and the stars aren’t asking for crazy raises, there’s no reason why we won’t be looking at another season — or more — of Glee. So let’s just look on the bright side of life and look forward to more mashups, breakups, and makeups this fall.
