Pretty Little Liars: Is Toby Dead? Why He Shouldn’t Be
Is Toby (Keegan Allen) really dead on Pretty Little Liars? It's the question on every PLL fan's mind. We're having a hard time thinking about anything else.
We've already gone over why we think Toby's probably alive based on spoilers we've heard. Now we want to take a step back from the evidence and get a bit more philosophical about why we hope he's not dead on a storytelling level, regardless of the nitty-gritty practicalities.
1. We need answers. While the writers have started to peel back the layers, we're still far from clear on exactly why Toby joined the "A" team — not to mention when he joined, and what role he played on the team. Yes, these questions could all be answered via flashbacks, a la Alison's (Sasha Pieterse) life story, but we'd rather hear at least some of the story from the man himself.
2. Spoby needs a conclusion. Whether you still want to see them make it work or are totally over the ship, there's no question that Spencer (Troian Bellisario) and Toby's relationship has been an important part of the show for the past three seasons. A relationship that major deserves a real conclusion. If Toby is dead, that would mean Spencer and Toby never saw each other after the moment where Spencer realized the truth. Even if the writers plan to end this romance tragically, fans deserve to see Spoby confront each other at least one more time. 3. If Toby dies, he should die on screen. We're not saying Toby should never die — in fact, we think redemption through death could be a satisfying (albeit heartbreaking) conclusion to his story. But if we are going to lose such a major character, the death should happen on screen. Or at the very least, we should know more about the context, and it should provide a meaningful conclusion to the story. As it is, the death came out of nowhere, and provides zero closure for anyone.
Fortunately, we're pretty sure we're going to get our wish, and Toby will be alive. But do you agree with us that it's way too early to take Toby out of the equation, or do you think Toby actually being dead would make for a good twist?
