Two-Month-Old Baby Dies From Father’s Kiss

Carl Maclaren and his wife Marrie-Claire McCormick, who live in the UK, were over the moon when they welcomed their first child, Kaiden McCormick, in March 2012.

“We were smitten with him. He looked the image of his daddy with a shock of dark hair and blue eyes,” Marrie-Claire told the Daily Mail. Sadly, only two months later, Baby Kaiden died from a kiss from his father.

Kaiden’s body shut down after contracting a cold sore virus from Carl. At only 2 weeks old, the baby started turning blue after refusing a bottle. Hours later, Marrie-Claire tried feeding him again and she noticed he had stopped breathing. “Pure panic hit, I just screamed at Carl to call an ambulance,” she said.

After arriving at the hospital, Kaiden was rushed into resuscitation. Carl and Marrie-Claire were shocked to find out that herpes could be the cause of their tiny baby’s declining health. “I asked how it was possible for a baby to have herpes? When he said it was transmitted via the cold sore virus I looked at Carl and he instinctively touched his lip. In that moment I saw his heart break in two,” remembers Marrie-Claire. “I never once blamed Carl. All he had ever done was shower our baby with love and affection. He had been the perfect father. I hated seeing him punish himself.”

Sadly, Kaiden was kept on a ventilator for six more weeks until doctors finally suggested it might be time to take him off. Following Kaiden’s tragic death, the couple wrote to the health secretary asking that more information about the herpes virus be distributed to expectant moms and first-time parents. No parent should ever have to go through what Carl and Marrie-Claire have been through.

Marrie-Claire is now pregnant again with their daughter, who is due in April. “She is our reason to live again. But I will never get over losing my son Kaiden,” said Marrie-Claire. “He would have been a fantastic big brother if he hadn’t been taken by a kiss. No baby should ever die because of a kiss.”
