Can You Guess Which City Has Earned the Title of “Divorce Capital of the World”?
Need to make some big-time cash when you divorce your super wealthy spouse? You better hop across the pond, because London is now officially the divorce capital of the world.
According to The Guardian, the title has been solidified by a string of pricey divorce settlements in favor of the less wealthy spouse, and apparently, it’s a title the Mayor of London enjoys. In November 2012, Mayor Boris Johnson actually urged “injured spouses of the worlds’ billionaires” to come to London to take their exes “to the cleaners.”
At least Paris doesn’t have to worry about losing its City of Love title to London anytime soon!
So how did the city achieve Divorce Capital status? By having some of the most high profile, and expensive, divorce settlements, of course. Celebrity splits like those of Paul McCartney and Heather Mills, which resulted in a $48.6 million payout for the former Dancing With The Stars contestant, have helped prove that London courts seem to side with the less wealthy spouse. Madonna’s former hubby, Guy Ritchie, is reported to have been rewarded with $76 to $92 million following their divorce.
However, that’s not to say that divorcing in the U.S. is cheap. After all, director Steven Spielberg’s 1989 divorce from Amy Irving reportedly cost him around $100 million, while former Chicago Bulls player Michael Jordan’s divorce from Juanita Jordan was estimated at $168 million!
