The Kardashians

Is It Inappropriate For Kris Jenner To Profit From Her Famous Kids?

Kris Jenner, the world’s most famous “momager”, gets a very bad rep for a lot of things. Sure, she wears some questionable clothing and has a potty mouth, but her chief offense always seems to be the money she makes from her famous daughters’ careers.

Nearly every article about Kris pushing the careers of Khloe, Kourtney and Kim Kardashian and now Kendall and Kylie Jenner makes pointed reference to the fact that Kris pockets 10% of what they earn. Is it inappropriate for Kris to make money from her children?

If you consider that she’s acting as their manager, it only makes sense. All celebrities have an agent, or a manager, or both, and all agents/managers take home at least 10% of their client’s income. On a purely financial level, the Kardashians are Kris’ clients. She works hard to make them money, and she takes home her share. Done and done.

On an ethical level, it’s that hard work that is the sticky wicket. Should she have pushed her daughters to get married on reality TV, for a considerable sum? As a manager, yes; as a mom...that is a question for wiser folks — or, perhaps, those more familiar with the Kardashian kids and their own ambitions — to unravel.

Kris is the most visible momager on the scene today, but she’s hardly the first parent to manage a famous child’s career. Combining the personal and professional relationships is tricky, so being a momager (or dadager) is not without its hazards: just think of Lindsay and Dina Lohan, or Jessica and Joe Simpson. But on the other hand, Lesley Vogel managed daughter Hayden Panettiere, and Mathew Knowles was daughter Beyonce’s manager until 2011.

So why do people think Kris is such a monster? Because Kris is in the public eye herself, thanks to Keeping Up With The Kardashians, she’s certainly an easier target than most managers. And because the Kardashians are reality stars, they are dealing with public appearances and tabloid photos, instead of, say, which film role to take next. For example, Kris apparently wanted to broker a deal to sell the first photos of Penelope Disick, Kourtney’s daughter and her granddaughter, and there is just something of an ick factor to that.

So, the dilemma remains! Does this make her an evil, moneygrubbing mommy dearest? Or is she just a ruthless manager, the kind many celebs are happy to have on their side? This is no easy question and certainly has no easy answer. What do you think? Let us know!
