Vincent Powell American Idol 2013 Semi-Finals Performance (VIDEO)
There are a lot of old souls on season 12 ofAmerican Idol, andVincent Powell is one of them. On hisshowcaseyourmusic.com site, he calls his style a “unique blend of gospel and jazz with a contemporary flavor.” That contemporary flavor was key in his Las Vegas performance. Singing Lenny Williams’ 1978 hit, “Cause I Love You,” he could have fallen victim to seeming dated compared to the other hopefuls who chose more current songs. But the American Idol 2013 judges loved him. "It was a good old-fashioned, it was a sexy old-fashioned,"Nicki Minajsaid. She didn't hesitate to tell him that he was going through to the next round. AndKeith Urban,Mariah Carey, andRandy Jackson gave him a standing ovation. Randy even said, “I felt like the show tonight started right here.” The 29-year-old Houston-based youth minister and worship curator has a signature look on top of his signature sound, as he always wears distinctive, thick black-framed glasses. Vincent studied television, radio, and film at Texas Southern University, where he reportedly sang with a jazz ensemble. Vincent definitely didn’t come to Idol as a complete newbie. In addition to making it to the Top 40 for season 11, Vincent has already released a 12-track gospel CD, aptly titled Convinced, as well as a Christmas album.
The talented singer’s singing career was almost predestined. As he toldamericanidol.com last year, “This was kind of frightening, but my mother and sisters are singers, so it was in the genes.”
Americanidol.com caught up with Vincent backstage just after his stellar performance in Las Vegas, and he told them he wasn’t going to get complacent due to the high praise he received. In fact, he said, “This is only the beginning...I’m determined...I have to take it up a notch.” He’s up for the challenge, saying, “Let the games begin.”
