Pretty Little Liars Aria and Ezra: Are You Over Ezria?

Aria (Lucy Hale) and Ezra (Ian Harding) have been together on and off since the beginning of Pretty Little Liars. They have had some epic moments, but we can’t help but be a bit bored of their storyline as of late. Are we (dare we say it)... over Ezria?

Hidden Romance Repeat
Because Aria and Ezra are just so cute together, we were willing to give the PLL writers a little time to make this Ezra’s family issues storyline more interesting, but we ran out of patience about three Fitzgerald family emergencies ago. When we heard Aria tell her school principal that she and Ezra aren’t dating so he might have a chance at a high school teaching job, we wanted to throw something at the television.

We’ve already seen enough of the together-but-pretending-not-to-to-be-together Ezria relationship. It had some high points, but that doesn’t mean we want to revisit it. If the writers need to put Ezria back into the same situation they were in in Season 1 to make their relationship interesting, then we may be ready for Aria and Ezra to call it quits.

Who is Aria Without Ezra? We Can’t Remember.
One of the things we like about this show is that the teenage girls on it are not defined by their romantic relationships. Sure, their love lives are a major part of their storylines, but their characters are also about friendship and family and seeking justice. They are well-rounded in a way that many female teenage characters on television are not.

Which is why it totally sucks that most of Aria’s storyline this season has been focused on her relationship with Ezra. Sure, she also had the possibility of her father’s involvement in Ali’s death to deal with, but so much of her character has been swallowed up by Ezra and his family. What happened to the Aria that writes stories or takes photography classes or even takes some initiative in the hunt for “A”? We miss her.

A Floundering Aria
Although she has a lot of deal with, Aria usually has her shit together (well, as together as someone who is constantly being stalked by a team of personal emotional terrorists). When we saw Aria break down to her mom about her relationship uncertainties, it was real and engaging in a way much of Aria’s recent stuff hasn’t been. And we couldn’t help but want to see more of that and less of Ezria kicking around the apartment.

Maybe that sounds harsh, but we are sick of seeing Aria just coast along . We want to see Action Aria! Or even Miserable Aria! As tough as it has been to watch Spence break down this season, Troian’s performance has been riveting, and we hope the other girls get a chance to stretch their acting muscles like she has. We want happy endings for our Liars, we sure do love the bumps along the way.
