The Voice’s MacKenzie Bourg Talks New Single and Upcoming Projects — Exclusive

On November 8, 2012, we said goodbye to Team Cee Lo Green’s MacKenzie Bourg on The Voice Season 3. But the adorable crooner who was described by Adam Levine as a “combination of Harry Potter and Justin Bieber” didn’t stop his musical dreams on that stage four months ago.

In late February 2013 he released his first post-Voice single, “Everyone’s Got a Story,” to massive fan appreciation and some iTunes success.

Wetpaint Entertainment recently caught up with the rising star to talk about life after the cameras stop rolling.

“I never would have expected independently to get to 52 on the iTunes charts,” he admitted. “I think that The Voice kind of got me to do the current Top 40, songs that are popular now. It got me the crowd that I’ve been really successful with. I think maybe that tied in to the success because it seemed like the younger crowd definitely were the people pushing me.”

And this encouragement has led MacKenzie to work on a new EP.

“I’m going to release a 5 or 6-song EP in the coming months,” he revealed. “This stuff, I feel like, is in my comfort zone, in my wheelhouse.”

MacKenzie has dreams of being a singer/songwriter in the vein of John Mayer, Jason Mraz, and Bruno Mars — big shoes to fill, but he’s never let a challenge stop him.

In MacKenzie’s blind audition, we learned that he almost died after a virus shut down his organs and caused heart failure.

“I was watching my son, literally just passing away,” Mackenzie’s father told host Carson Daly on the show. “The amazing thing about it was that he made a promise to wake up before Super Bowl Sunday, and he woke up the night before.”

Season 2 of The Voice premiered on Super Bowl Sunday and after watching the first episode with his dad, MacKenzie decided to audition.

He made it through the blinds, past the battle and knockout rounds, and through one stage of live shows. But his fans (fondly referred to as the “macpack”) haven’t forgotten him.

Along with fellow Season 3 contestants Sam James, Charlie Rey, and Trevin Hunte, MacKenzie sold out The Roxy — the famous Hollywood venue that Adam Levine notoriously insulted on The Voice — with a concert on Jan. 30, 2013.

And though the singer doesn’t have a release date for his EP yet, we’ll be waiting to hear his melodious sounds on some brand new tunes.
