Glee May Feature School Shooting in Upcoming Episode — Too Soon?
When it comes to Glee spoilers, we generally trust what we hear from the cast or crew themselves. But as far as other spoilers floating around on the Internet, we tend to take them with a liberal helping of salt.
However, when we came across this unconfirmed spoiler, we couldn’t help but take notice. According to Gleek Out Brasil — a Glee fansite based on Tumblr and operated out of Brazil — Episode 18 of Season 4 will be titled “Shooting Star.” And they affirm that “Shooting” refers to gun violence.
According to GOB, “Yes, it’s a real gun shot, it’s not a joke and will not be treated like a joke. But no one will get hurt.” That last part is a huge relief, but it’s still a really scary plot point to contemplate. And, given the recent tragedies in Newtown, CT and Aurora, CO, we have to wonder — is it too soon for Glee to tackle such a sensitive topic?
While we don’t know how Gleek Out Brasil gets their information, their Tumblr has a staggeringly high accuracy rate with their spoilers, so we’re willing to bet Glee really is going to go there. With the outpouring of grief and prayer from the Glee cast and crew at the time of the Newtown shooting, we’re sure the writers will take pains to be extra sensitive.
Still, we worry that a school shooting — even one without fatalities — might be traumatic for many Glee fans, some of whom are school-age. In fact, there may even be a lot of Glee fans among the survivors of the Newtown tragedy. Is it too soon? We guess we’ll have to wait and see how it plays out (if it indeed comes to pass), but we’d be lying if we didn’t say this potential plot twist troubles us.
What do you think — is it a positive thing that Glee is tackling gun violence in schools, or do you think they should let the dust settle a bit more on the Newtown tragedy before going there?
