American Idol 2013: Amber Holcomb Top 10 Interview – Exclusive

Amber Holcomb is back for her second try at winning American Idol after being cut last season before reaching the Top 10. This year, the 18-year-old Texas native tells Wetpaint in an exclusive interview she is “beyond ready” to fight her way to the Season 12 finale.

Your heart must have stopped a little when you heard you were going through to the American Idol 2013 Top 10?

It did. Oh, my gosh, it was like the world stood still. When he said my name I think I sat there for a second. They were like, “Amber, Amber.” I was like, Okay. You know what I'm saying? It was so surreal.

How are you feeling now?

I'm still not in it yet. It still hasn't hit me completely, I guess you can say, but I'm excited.

Are you ready for the competition?

Yes, I'm beyond ready. I'm glad America knows who I am, and I cannot wait to show America what I have.

Who are your musical influences?

Oh, wow. It's scattered all over the place. Karen Carpenter, Whitney Houston, Azealia Banks, Rihanna, Beyoncé, Celine Dion, somewhere in that range.

The big belters.

Yeah, the belters, but then, at the same time Rihanna, the more relatable, upbeat kind of, something like that.

You’ve done the big songs, and you’ve done them so well. What about you and a Rihanna song? Is there a risk in doing that?

It is kind of a risk if you're not comfortable to dance. If you're not a dancer, then you probably want to stay away from it, but I feel like I can dance. You’ve got to the look in the mirror a little bit and move and feel it.

You're obviously singing covers. How do you make sure that you stay true to yourself while singing other people's songs?

I feel like when you say true to yourself, you're happy. You're most happy. So when I sing a song, I just run through it in my head and try to add my own things to it where I can go on stage even if I am nervous, it will still sound great because I did it. So I mean, I just add on little things.

Who would be your dream mentor?

Out of everybody? Celine Dion. She gets on stage, and she sings like the album. It’s never a flaw. I've never heard her mess up.

Stay tuned for more from Amber Holcomb and the other American Idol Season 12 Top 10 contestants as our exclusive interviews continue!
