Nashville’s Charles Esten: Rayna Is Deacon’s Real Addiction — Exclusive

It’s a story as old as time: two people become so intertwined that they can’t find a way out — even if they wanted to. But while we are already bored by this concept and that sentence, there’s one pair on Nashville that keeps our minds and hearts racing: Deacon (Charles Esten) and Rayna (Connie Britton). Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with Charles Esten at PaleyFest 2013 to talk about his feelings on their star-crossed love.

Let’s refresh: Before we met Deacon and Rayna, they were happy and played music together and had romance up the wazoo. But with the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle came Deacon’s much-discussed substance abuse problems, and eventually Rayna left him in rehab and didn’t look back. Rather than continue to wait for his sobriety, she moved on to He Who Shall Not Be Named. But now that their marriage is over, will Raycon be back on?

“Deacon is old enough and wise enough to understand it's not a binary thing like a light switch like this relationship is off this relationship is on,” Charles explains of Rayna’s current romantic status. “She's really mixed up and lost and doing the best for her children, doing her best to honor the marriage she's coming out of. Our timing isn't always great, its going to always be interesting and complicated I think.”

So, what’s the point of sticking by her and waiting? Yeah, we saw that hand holding at Deacon’s birthday party. Is it just hope keeping them within a hand’s length of one another, or something more? And will the hope eventually have dire consequences for the former addict?

“He's trying to find his way in the current episodes we're shooting,” Chip spills. “He's trying to always stay on that healthy path of what's right and what's wrong. Clearly booze isn't healthy. Sometimes you've got to even think that Deacon and Rayna isn't healthy, at least it's not healthy in the incarnation it's in right now.” So, basically, Deacon is addicted to Rayna? Sure gives her song lyrics “pour me something stronger than me” another meaning...

The actor continues, “He tries to find things that are [healthy] and I'm going to keep fighting hard for that and we'll see how well I can stay on that path.”

Do you think Rayna is an unhealthy focus for Deacon? Would you want to see them together, even if it meant that there would be consequences? Weigh in below.
