American Idol 2013 Recap: Top 10 Performances on 3/13/2013 (VIDEOS)

Who will be voted off American Idol 2013 this week? Well, it could all come down to the song choices tonight in our live American Idol recap.

The theme for the Top 10 performance show tonight is “Music of the American Idols,” and stepping into the footsteps of a memorable former contestant could prove to be a tough act to follow for some of the hopefuls.

Which Season 12 Top 10 singer will make a former Idol’s song their own? Join us for our live American Idol 2013 recap and watch the performances with us!

On tonight’s episode of American Idol Season 12, the Top 10 will be performing “Music of the American Idols.” The exact details of what song choices they have to work with have been a bit sketchy. We know they were allowed to pick a song previously performed on Idol by a former contestant. However, we’re still not quite sure if they were also allowed to choose songs written or performed by an alumafter they exited the show.

Usually by now during the season, we are able to dig up American Idol spoilers on what the finalists will be singing by the morning of the performance show. This week, however, producers have kept a super-secret tight lid on the songs for tonight. We can only hope the contestants were given a nice, wide selection to make wise choices from.

At this stage in the game, any of the American Idol 2013 Top 10 could still give a wow performance that will propel them to the top of the favorites list. Let’s find out if one of them will be celebrated in future seasons for their Idol performance tonight!

First up for the evening, host Ryan Seacrest introduces the judges... but one of them appears to be missing? Ryan is sitting in Nicki Minaj’s chair because, apparently, she’s stuck in traffic on the 405 in L. A. You’d think maybe she’d try and leave a little earlier to be in time for a live show?

While we wait for Nicki to arrive, Ryan goes over the new Supervote feature introduced this year, and plugs the American Idol app for anyone who cares about all that.

American Idol Curtis Finch Jr. “I Believe” by Fantasia Top 10 Performance

Vote: 1-866-436-5701
(AT&T customers can text “VOTE” to 5701)

Judges: Keith Urban says Curtis “always picks the right songs” because he knows who he is. However, he says it is easy to sing a little off key when you are pumped up with adrenaline. Randy Jackson says he loves the new styling and Curtis’ “fly jacket.” He likes the performance, but he thinks Curtis needs to stretch out and give people something different than the usual gospel sound. Mariah Carey, on the other hand, loves the gospel soul music because that’s what she feels from him. “I love what you did tonight,” she says, “and I’ve loved your previous performances. Keep doing what you do.”

Our Rating: 6 out of 10

American Idol Janelle Arthur “Gone” by Montgomery Gentry Top 10 Performance (previously performed by Scotty McCreery)

Vote: 1-866-436-5702

(AT&T customers can text “VOTE” to 5702)

Judges: Keith Urban says Janelle was “burning it up” on stage tonight and he really liked her classic runs. Nicki Minaj has finally arrived and she’s looking kind of like a hungover prize fighter in a hoodie and oversized sunglasses. She thinks Janelle’s song last week was better and this song didn’t really wowed her. She wants Janelle to sing something “prettier.” Randy Jackson loves all the styling but thinks the song didn’t “lead anywhere” and wasn’t the greatest song choice for her. He just didn’t love it. Mariah Carey says Janelle’s “aura” was definitely giving off a star vibe. She would have rather heard a ballad or something more raw, but she still liked the performance.

Our Rating: 5 out of 10

American Idol Devin Velez “Temporary Home” by Carrie Underwood Top 10 Performance

Vote: 1-866-436-5703

(AT&T customers can text “VOTE” to 5703)

Judges: Keith Urban doesn’t think this was the best performance for Devin, but he has a beautiful voice and he hopes “we get to hear you sing again.” Nicki Minaj says that is “so crazy” and she feels the total opposite of Keith. She loved it and she thought Devin sounded great and looked comfortable and confident. She loved the song with his voice. Randy Jackson thinks this one was “way too safe” and he thinks the contestants aren’t getting that they need to go for the gold every time they hit the stage. Mariah Carey says Devin has the ability to do so much that they expect so much from him because he’s that good.

Our Rating: 6 out of 10

American Idol Angie Miller "I Surrender" by Celine Dion Top 10 Performance (previously performed by Kelly Clarkson)

Vote: 1-866-436-5704
(AT&T customers can text “VOTE” to 5704)

Judges: Keith Urban says he surrenders! He loves that Angie can take a song from any era and make it new and fresh. He thinks she knocked it out of the park tonight and it was gorgeous. Nicki Minaj says Angie looks like a billion dollars tonight. She says Angie’s legs are giving her “everything she needed in life today.” Nicki says Angie is “perfection on every level” and she can’t even critique on anything. “You are a superstar,” she says, but she does hate it when she parts ways with her piano. Randy Jackson says he was thinking a minute ago, “where is the competition,” and seeing her perform, “the competition starts now!” Randy says he loved every part of it and she is, “in it to win it!” Mariah Carey only has one word to say about Angie tonight: “Stellar.”

Our Rating: 9 out of 10

American Idol Paul Jolley “Amazed” by Lonestar Top 10 Performance (previously performed by Scotty McCreery)

Vote: 1-866-436-5705
(AT&T customers can text “VOTE” to 5705)

Judges: Keith Urban says he has always loved this song. He thinks Paul has been listening to the advice he has been given. Nicki Minaj says this is the first time Paul Jolley has “stimulated my sexual appetite,” which would make me flee from the building in terror. She thinks Paul really did the song justice tonight and he did a great job tonight. Randy says he’s not going to “talk about the sexuality but...” he thought it was a great song choice and Paul has been taking in all the advice. He thinks it was very nice. Mariah Carey says she loves that Paul followed the advice given to him, but she doesn’t want him to lose the “real singer in you” and hold back too much.

Our Rating: 6 out of 10

American Idol Candice Glover “I Who Have Nothing” by Ben E. King Top 10 Performance (previously performed by Jordin Sparks)

Vote: 1-866-436-5706
(AT&T customers can text “VOTE” to 5706)

Judges: Standing ovation! Keith Urban says if they had more time, they’d just stand there and clap. He says her voice is effortless and she never lets the audience pull her out of her zone. “You’re incredible baby, amazing!” Nicki Minaj says it would be in everybody’s best interest to never, ever sing that song again. She thinks it should be banned from Idol from here on out because Candice destroyed it. This was Nicki’s favorite performance by Candice. Randy Jackson says he can tell when all the judges are loving it and Candice really “worked that song out.” He thinks it was one of the greatest performances on the show this season. “That song had everything and it was perfect!” Mariah says every time Candice is on stage, she is transfixed watching her. “A singer of your caliber could just anything.” She also says the only reason she did not stand up with the others is that her skirt is far too tight.

Our Rating: 9 1/2 out of 10

American Idol Lazaro Arbos “Breakaway” by Kelly Clarkson Top 10 Performance

Vote: 1-866-436-5707
(AT&T customers can text “VOTE” to 5707)

Judges: Keith Urban wants to know why Lazaro chose this song. It’s hard for him to get out, but Lazaro says he loves the words and this is what he wants to do with his life, to fly. Keith says he doesn’t think this song just wasn’t in his wheelhouse, and Lazaro agrees. Nicki Minaj says she likes that Lazaro looks like Ricky Ricardo tonight, a cute cuddly one. However, this is her least favorite song from him so far. She thinks today he seemed very nervous and he can’t let anyone knock him “off his square.” Randy Jackson says it wasn’t the right song and Lazaro’s pitch was just all over the place. Mariah Carey says she thinks a lot of people are “falling in love with the courage you have” and how he just sings no matter what he is going through.

Our Rating: 4 out of 10

American Idol Kree Harrison “Crying” by Roy Orbison Top 10 Performance (previously performed by Carrie Underwood)

Vote: 1-866-436-5708
(AT&T customers can text “VOTE” to 5708)

Judges: Keith Urban says Kree could “sing the phonebook” and sound great. If she went and made a record, he’d go and buy it right now. He thinks she is already there and “it’s beautiful baby.” Nicki Minaj calls Kree “hairy” or “harry,” we’re not sure which. She starts rambling about Aunt Jemima syrup and pancakes and this is what Kree’s performance was like for her. Smooth and buttery and delicious. Randy Jackson thinks Nicki is insane, but he agrees that Kree was awesome. He says her voice makes him feel good all over. Nicki asks if it makes him feel “tingly” and he ignores the sexual innuendo. Mariah Carey says it’s obvious she has an enormous range, she can sing any kind of song, and she loves the song choice. “You can’t help but emote, you can’t help but be real when you sing.”

Our Rating: 8 out 10

American Idol Burnell Taylor “Flying Without Wings" by Ruben Studdard Top 10 Performance

Vote: 1-866-436-5709
(AT&T customers can text “VOTE” to 5709)

Judges: Keith Urban says he finds Burnell really “magnetic” and thinks he was great tonight. Nicki Minaj says she loves that song. She says Burnell always puts his own twist on a song and it makes him look like an artist. She says it was a “good job.” Randy Jackson says it was really good and he “vindicated for the boys tonight.” Mariah Carey says she doesn’t want to go through any long, drawn out thing but there is just something about him that makes her very emotional when he sings. She says he is very unique and he could take his gift all the way.

Our Rating: 7 out of 10

American Idol Amber Holcomb "A Moment Like This" by Kelly Clarkson Top 10 Performance

Vote: 1-866-436-5710
(AT&T customers can text “VOTE” to 5710)

Judges: Another standing ovation tonight! Keith Urban says he loves this song for her and how easy it is for her. (Really, we hated it...) He thinks it was really, really beautiful. Nicki Minaj says it was the “best performance of the night” and her aura reminds her of Whitney Houston’s first album. She’s so impressed with her beauty, grace... and her voice is on “another level.” (What? She was NOT that good...) Nicki says she would pay to see Amber wear pink lipstick. (Okay...) Randy Jackson says he loves Amber and she blew this song out of the park. He thinks she has arrived and it was so beautiful and perfect. He says the girls are killing the guys tonight. Mariah says “#pow” and that’s all she can say. She thinks Amber was “magnificant.”

Our Rating: 6 out of 10
