Who Got Voted Off American Idol Tonight? 3/14/2013

Up until now on American Idol 2013, these Top 10 hopefuls have made very few missteps. Last night, however, not all of them hit it out of the park with their song choices. Our American Idol predictions for who got voted off tonight has a lot to do with song choice on the show last night.

The theme was “Music of the American Idols,” so they could have chosen a song by an American Idol winner, or one performed on the show. Some had huge moments (we’re talking to you, Candice Glover) while others fell surprisingly flat (sorry, Devin Velez). But when it comes to who is going home on American Idol tonight, we think it will be Curtis Finch, Jr.

Curtis, Curtis, Curtis -- if he’d only gone with our song choice for him, he would have been amazeballs (soon to be added to the urban dictionary). We chose James Ingram’s “Just Once” for him, which was performed by season 5 winner Taylor Hicks. Instead, he took on the song no one but Fantasia should ever, ever, ever ever. It was her coronation song, “I Believe”. Just as Nicki Minaj said no one should ever perform “I Who Have Nothing” ever again after Candice knocked that out of the universe, no one will ever live up to the way Fantasia sang that song. Curtis tried to add his gospel flair, but it didn’t quite work.

The judges were not as impressed with Curtis either. Keith Urban thought his adrenaline when he hit the stage got the better of him. Randy Jackson decided to focus on his “fly jacket,” most likely because it looked like he took it from The Dawg’s closet. Mariah Carey said she likes his gospel choices. Here’s the thing -- the one who loves Curtis the most -- Her Minajesty -- was stuck in traffic on the 405, per Ryan Seacrest. What the what? Usually, she says Curtis Finch, Jr. sets the bar for everyone else, but her high opinion of him was nowhere to be found, and that likely hurt.

One also has to factor in the power of social media when it comes to a hopeful’s popularity and capturing the votes, and Curtis is dead last for Twitter followers. We will sure miss his enthusiasm and those smooth-as-silk vocals, but we think it’s the end of the road for “CJ”.

Here’s a super intriguing twist to add to that. It appears Curtis reportedly has an arrest record, which has typically been bad news for an American Idol contestant in the past. Usually the producers seem to end up throwing contestants with a criminal history off the show, but so far they havent' this time around. Even worse, the arrest was reportedly for stealing a laptop from another church member at choir practice! Will the voters decide his gospel vibe doesn't mesh with that kind of criminal history?

The other two singers who were off their game last night were Devin and Lazaro Arbos, but Lazaro has a ton of viewer support, so he could manage to skate through even with his terrible song choice. Who made it through tonight? Here come the results!
