Pretty Little Liars Season 3: The 8 Best Moments — Toby’s Betrayal, Spencer Snaps & More
Season 3 of Pretty Little Liarsis almost over, and we thought it would be a good time to look back on the most memorable moments from the past 23 episodes. Here are a few of our all-time favorites:
Best Aria Moment Aria (Lucy Hale) hasn’t had much to do this season on the “A” hunt, but she has had a few good moments to shine. Our favorite has to be when she sees Alison in her room while sick with the flu/drugged by Meredith. She asks for an explanation from Ali about why she was blackmailing Aria’s father the summer of Ali’s “death.” “How could you do that to my family? To me?” Aria asks her, demanding accountability from Ali in a way that she never has before.
Best Spencer Moment Let’s face it: Season 3 should probably be dubbed the Season of Spencer (Troian Bellisario). In the first half of the season, she went balls to the wall in her hunt for “A.” The second half has seen her slowly morphing into a new version of herself as she struggles to deal with the reality of Toby’s betrAyal. We can’t choose just one scene, so we called this one a tie. Our first favorite Spencer moment came in Season 3, Episode 20: “Hot Water” when Spence tackles Mona to the ground at the decathlon meet. That was most definitely Spencer’s breaking point.
Our other favorite Spencer moment came in Season 3, Episode 22: “Will the Circle Be Unbroken?” when the extent of Spencer’s depression is made known in her group therapy session at Radley. The moment when she asks, “How do you keep going when the worst thing has happened? What do you need to change inside to survive? Who do you have to become?” is both heartbreaking and ominous for what’s to come when Spencer joins the “A” team.
Best Emily Moment Emily (Shay Mitchell) hasn’t had an easy time of it this season, either: dealing with the death of Maya; being stalked by Maya’s killer, Nate; and killing Nate in self-defense. But, through it all, she has come out on the other side still willing to fight back against “A”— and to keep searching for Ali’s killer. She has really filled Spence’s shoes since the latter’s downward spiral, but it was never more clear than when she refused to be a victim in Episode 15: “Mona-Mania.” In a moment of fearlessness, she took off after a hooded Toby into the woods after he’s slashed the tires on Paige’s car.
Best Hanna Moment Hanna (Ashley Benson) can be pretty fearless herself. She has so many sassy Season 3 moments, but one of our favorites is when she called Jenna out on being able to see. In true dramatic fashion, Hanna strolls in front of Jenna’s car, looks her straight in the eye, and makes a blindness pun: “Wow, Jenna. What a sight for sore eyes.” When she’s fed up, Hanna really knows how to cut through the BS, and that’s one of the things we love most about her! (Case in point, another one of our favorite Hanna-isms: “Sometimes you poke the bear, and other times the bear pokes you.”)
Best Reveal Our favorite reveal of the season has to go to Toby’s betrayal in Episode 12: “The Lady Killer.” This reveal itself was a total shockers, but the drama continued as we watched Spencer and the other Liars deal with the betrAyal, as well as ask questions about Toby’s true motives.
Best Tearjerker Whose heart didn’t break at the sight of Spencer curled up against Toby’s apartment door, crying her eyes out and asking for an explanation? The fact that Spencer didn’t just immediately get furious at Toby says a lot about the depth of her love for him. Maybe it’s because we’re still waiting for the resolution to this storyline, but we can’t help but tear up at the mere thought of this scene — one of many that Troian has knocked out of the park this season.
Best Mona Moment Watching Janel Parrish play the gleefully calculating Mona has been so much fun. Mona has had many intriguing moments in Season 3, but one of our favorites came early earlier in the season. When Caleb came to visit Mona at Radley to tell her to stay away from Hanna, she listens patiently before responding, “you are a lousy kisser,” and letting loose an epic scream-fest.
Best Parental Moment Our favorite parental moment from the season goes to Ashley Marin hitting the accelerator and running down Wilden with her car. As a rule, we don’t condone running people over, but we love how Ashley totally has her daughter’s back (and besides, Wilden’s fine).
The other PLL parents have their moments (no, Byron, we’re not talking to you), but Ashley Marin is consistently a badass who seems to have more of an idea of what’s going on in her daughter’s life than any of the other Rosewood parentals. (Ella gets runner-up in this category for the scene in which she comforts a crying Aria, who is conflicted about whether or not she should stay with Ezra.)
