Whether you love or hate the idea, the Top 9 of American Idol 2013 are set to perform the songs of John Lennon and Paul McCartney this Wednesday, March 20. It’s definitely been either the kiss of death for Idols past (Tim Urban’s rendition of “All My Loving” comes to mind), while others have soared by performing music by these two icons (no one will ever top David Cook’s “Eleanor Rigby”). It’s more important than ever these folks pick the right song for them, and here is what we choose for the Top 9 from season 12:
Devin Velez -- This guy has established himself by singing Spanish in some of his songs, but we think he’ll take a stab at some French this week with “Michelle”.
Paul Jolley -- We’re not going to say it’s a good choice, per se, but we can see Paul wanting to sing “Eleanor Rigby”. Of course, David Cook’s version will go down in Idol history, so it’s certainly a risky move. If not, he may play it safe and sing the same song as Casey James from his season, which was “Jealous Guy”.
Lazaro Arbos -- Lazaro’s tween fans will surely swoon if he sings “Something”. Get ready, girls -- maybe he’ll even throw his bow tie to one of you.
Janelle Arthur -- After doing an up tempo number last week, we can see Janelle changing things up with a ballad. We don’t know how she’ll bring her country twang to “Yesterday,” but it would definitely be an interesting choice for her.
Burnell Taylor -- You might think we’re crazy for this one, but we’d love Burnell to sing “Hey Jude”. Lee Dewyze did the song justice during season 9, and we think Burnell would, too.
Amber Holcomb -- Siobhan Magnus did an amazing rendition of “Across the Universe,” and we think Amber could sing the heck out of this powerful song.
Candice Glover -- Much like Kree, Candice is a pro at choosing songs that let her shine, and we think “Let It Be” would be an absolute show-stopper for her.
Angie Miller -- We have a sneaking suspicion she’ll be back at the piano this week, so “Imagine” has Angie’s name all over it. We’ve got chills just thinking about it.
Kree Harrison -- Kree could really have a field day with anything from the Lennon/McCartney songbook, but we would be moved to tears if she sang “The Long And Winding Road”.
