American Idol Spoilers: Season 12 Top 9 Song Theme Revealed

There’s no denying that, in the 12 seasons of American Idol, some of the song themes have been controversial. While many were thrilled when the John Lennon/Paul McCartney songbook was released to Idol for performances, others were left unimpressed when hopefuls took on songs by the music legends. It’s a lot to live up to, and these singers are already under a ton of pressure.

Whether you love this theme or not, it’s back for this week’s performance show. On Wednesday, March 20 (8 p.m.-10 p.m. ET), the Top Nine finalists will hit the Idol stage to perform songs of John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

Is America tired of this theme? While nearly everyone loves The Beatles, this theme has a certain “been there, done that” feel to it. And, because everyone knows their music so well, the performers are automatically held to a higher standard. In past seasons, some have used this to their advantage (like David Cook’s memorable performance of “Eleanor Rigby”), while others have been put to shame (anyone remember Kristy Lee Cook’s performance of “Eight Days A Week”? Shivers!).

When it comes down to it, the song choice has never been more important, so we hope these folks pick wisely. We’re thinking we’ll definitely hear “Let It Be,” “Imagine,” and “Something,” as these Top Nine are all about the ballads. Singers like Kree Harrison and Candice Glover have shown they have a knack for choosing songs that are perfectly suited for their voices, so we’re positively giddy to find out what they choose. And, after being in the bottom two, Devin Velez had better come to play.
