The Walking Dead’s End Game: Will the Survivors Ever Reach a Safe Haven? – Exclusive

The Walking Dead is so anchored in the here and now that it’s difficult to imagine the central characters ever advancing beyond the prison, and the muggy South in general. But could there really be a special place untouched by walkers and could Rick’s group eventually reach that haven?

Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with executive producers Robert Kirkman and Greg Nicotero at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ “An Evening With The Walking Dead” on February 5, and the both men addressed the possibility of an ultimate escape for the show’s survivors.

“I think right now it is unrealistic to think about them traveling that kind of distance,” Robert said, referring to the hope of the coast as a safe place. “I think the whole world is a very dangerous place, and they are really just trying to hunker down and find a place to survive. I think there are a lot of pie-in-the-sky discussions that go on and will continue to go on. There are definitely long-term, survivor strategies, but right now they are really just trying to get through this whole Governor mess. We'll see who survives.”

Greg reinforced this, revealing that the group’s prison days are far from over. “The prison is a great location,” he said. “It's almost a character within itself. So I think that we’ve pretty well established where our season has begun with Woodbury and the prison. I think that we have more to see of both those places.”

However, Greg acknowledged that crazy upheavals are what The Walking Dead is all about.

“The show has certainly evolved,” Greg said. “It's weird to go to work, and you expect to see Jon Bernthal [Shane] there, and he's not there. And you expect to see Sarah Wayne Callies [Lori]. So that definitely changes the dynamic and the feel when you have certain actors that are with you.”

Basically, anything can happen post-zombie apocalypse.

The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9/8c on AMC.
