Will she come clean to Matthew about her experience between the sheets? More importantly, does April want to have sex with Matthew?
“She keeps getting closer and closer to having sex with him, but she’s not going to corrupt him, so she feels guilty about wanting to keep moving forward,” Sarah Drew told Wetpaint Entertainment.
“She has this whole scene with Meredith where she asks her for advice about it,” she added. “She refers to sex as ‘going to the carnival.’ She’s like, ‘You can’t un-ride the rides! I have ridden them, and they were amazing! And I don’t know what to do with Matthew because I don’t want to bring him to the carnival and corrupt him!’”
How will April break the news to her chaste paramedic boyfriend? And what about her friend and former fling Jackson? Does she still have feelings for him? Read our interview with Sarah to find out! (Hint: She says April is still “magnetically drawn to him,” so have hope Japril fans!)
Wetpaint Entertainment: There’s been so many changes at the hospital. In last week’s episode, we saw Alex deal with the fact that his friends are now his bosses. He wasn’t exactly thrilled. So how does April deal with the shift in power?
Sarah Drew: Well, those promotions happened because of a horrible plane crash where people died. So I think her having dodged that bullet is not something that’s bad for her. But I think the biggest thing for her is that the ER is open again. That’s the only thing she cares about. She needs to be somewhere where she can do her thing and train in the way that she needs to train.
April really fought for that ER!
Yeah, she did! In the next episode, the new ER is revealed, and it’s beautiful with big, new shiny toys for everybody to play with. All of the new logos are everywhere. It’s super high-tech, so she’s pretty stoked. She feels like she’s gotten a big win in this whole regime change.
Owen is also coming back as Chief. The mentor-mentee dynamic between April and Owen is really special. Will there be Owen/April scenes coming up?
In the next few episodes, I have a lot of scenes with Kevin [McKidd], which is really fun because I’ve been asking for them. I love working with Kevin, and I love their teacher-student dynamic. With the opening of the new ER, there’s a lot of interaction between them.
Well, redheads have to stick together.
Yes, they do! They absolutely do have to stick together!
Coming up, we know April is going to have to come clean to Matthew about not necessarily being a virgin.
In the episode that airs this week, she doesn’t tell him, but she’s agonizing over it because she’s realizing that even though he’s perfect and wants to wait -- which is exactly what she wanted -- she didn’t wait. She keeps getting closer and closer to having sex with him, but she’s not going to corrupt him, so she feels guilty about wanting to keep moving forward. She has this whole scene with Meredith where she asks her for advice about it. She refers to sex as “going to the carnival.” She’s like, “You can’t un-ride the rides! I have ridden them, and they were amazing! And I don’t know what to do with Matthew because I don’t want to bring him to the carnival and corrupt him!” And of course, Meredith is exactly the wrong person to ask about this because she’s like, “I don’t know why you’re asking me because I go to the carnival all the time.” So we’re just going to see April in agony over the stuff she’s always in agony about.
Does she end up telling Matthew?
The truth will come out, and there will be difficult consequences.
How’s the relationship between Jackson and April? They were best friends, then they slept together, and now he’s her boss.
I don’t think it affects her. She’s as kind and supportive -- or catty and annoying -- as she always has been to him, even with his new job. She’s just so consumed with her own drama right now, so it hasn’t really sunk in for her that he’s her boss.
For all of the Japril fans, can you please tell us what’s going on between those two?
I don’t know! They haven’t decided who they want April to end up with, so I honestly don’t know. For her to be with Jackson, her head needs to catch up with her heart; and for her to be with Matthew, her heart needs to catch up with her head. In her head, Matthew is exactly the right kind of person that she should be with. He views the world the same way she does. He’s wonderful, kind, loving, considerate, and he find her to be completely lovable and charming. But her heart still, in a lot of ways, belongs to Jackson, even though she won’t let her head allow that to take over. In her head, Jackson is not right for her. He doesn’t see the world the same way she does. They have issues, but she’s still magnetically drawn to him. He’s still the guy that knows her better than anyone else on the planet. So I don’t know how this is all going to work out!
It’s a win-win for her. They’re both very attractive.
And they both have beautiful souls! They both have different things to offer her. Matthew is sweet and supportive, but Jackson challenges her and her world view. He doesn’t let her get away with crap, and he doesn’t let her spin in her head about stuff she doesn’t need to be spinning about. So they’re both wonderful. It’s just a question of who does she love.
It’s been such a whirlwind season for April. By the finale, where do you see her?
I don’t know what will happen, but my hope for her -- because of all the therapy that I’ve been in -- is that she’ll stop feeling so guilty. This guilt that she has about things that she does and doesn’t do paralyzes her and keeps her from living her life. I think Jackson calls her out on that, and she needs to be called out on that. So Jackson could be a great person to help her with that. I want to see her have more freedom, but I also love her hilarious neuroses!
