Who is Charlie Askew? American Idol 2013 Contestant Background Info
We really didn't think this quirky guy could win this season, but we still loved him anyway! Although American Idol 2013 hopeful Charlie Askew did not make the Top 10 this season, we enjoyed every minute of his time on the show.
This Little Rock, Arkansas, native singer suffers from “Charlie Askew Syndrome,” according to his mom. Don’t worry -- it’s not contagious. He describes himself as “socially awkward,” but the doctors weren’t able to diagnose the issue, per se.
“When I was little I wasn’t able to reach out and connect with people socially or verbally,” Charlie said during his Baton Rouge American Idol 2013 audition. “Through music, finally I found an outlet, some way I can express myself.”
His quirky and candid persona captured the hearts of the judges, but it was his performances of Queen’s “Breakthru” followed by Nat King Cole’s “Nature Boy” that really wowed.
In his “Road to Hollywood” audition on americanidol.com, the Top 40 contestant said it was Robert Plant who inspired him. He watched the musical legend perform and said to himself, “That’s what I want to do.”
As for what makes him stand out, Charlie said, “I have perfect pitch.” He also plays several instruments.
Charlie is aiming high when it comes to his singing aspirations. Not only did he want to be the next American Idol but, as he said, “I want to change the world with my music.” Sadly he'll have to do it without the American Idol crown to back him up, but we wish him all the best! We were hoping he'd be selected as the alternate 'wildcard' for the American Idols LIVE! Tour, but alas, he lost out in the vote to Aubrey Cleland.
