2013 American Idol Ratings Drop to New Lows, Will the Show Be Renewed?

American Idol ratings continue to freefall, reaching new lows even as the show ramps up to the Season 12 finale in May. Can anything stop American Idol 2013 from continuing to slide down the slipperly slope into eventual cancellation?

We just can't figure out what is going on with American Idol ratings this year. Everyone expected the ratings would drop from last season. That's been true pretty much every season for years. We did not, however, expect the ratings to be consistently the worst since 2002. Or that Thursday night's Top 8 results show would be down 50 percent from the Season 12 premiere.

The elimination show fell another 7 percent this week, down to a sad 2.8 rating in the key 18 to 49 age group. As Entertainment Weekly noted, the show was beaten by Grey's Anatomy in early numbers for the 18 to 49 target demographic... That's crazy!

Okay, granted, the judges this year are kind of boring. Even Nicki Minaj is getting predictable and says the same things over and over. Mariah Carey is totally checked out and doesn't even realize she is repeating questions Randy Jackson just asked. Keith Urban is cute, but never says anything that interesting. And, let's face it, this year's crop of contestants is, on the whole, pretty lame. Even so,American Idol is nose-diving way faster than we could have predicted. Even worse, The Voice is about to premiere and steal even more of its core audience.

American Idol still managed to lead the night with the most overall viewers at 11.7 million viewers. Although, we have to note that CBS comedies on Thursday were replaced by NCAA basketball. CBS comedies have been trouncing American Idol ratings on Thursdays almost all season so far. Here is how the numbers broke down by network in the (advertiser-preferred) adults 18-49 category:

FOX: 3.9 ratings/10 share; 11.214 million viewers

ABC: 2.0 rating/5 share; 6.661 million viewers

CBS: 2.0 rating/5 share; 9.261 million viewers

NBC: 1.3 rating/4 share; 3.781 million viewers

CW: 1.0 rating/3 share; 2.276 million viewers

American Idol led into Glee, which was up 35 percent from its most recent episode, so that helped FOX’s ratings win the night, too. While American Idol may no longer dominate the way it used to, the ratings are still likely decent enough to still keep the show around for at least one more season. Maybe.
