American Idol’s Devin Velez on Nicki’s Censored Comments: “Who Says That?”

Devin Velez continues to impress viewers of American Idol 2013 with his smooth voice and confident stage presence. His performance of The Beatles’s “The Long and Winding Road" during the Top 9 show garnered praise from nearly all of the judges. Keith Urban noted that he didn’t think Devin connected emotionally with the song, but Randy Jackson felt like the singer finally found his swagger again.

In a post-performance red carpet chat with the media, Devin Velez talked about how military school has influenced how he’s competed on American Idol Season 12, and Nicki’s bleeped out statements about his “pianist” during the Top 9 performance show!

Q: You had a good week this week, how do you feel?

A: It feels great man, last week wasn't so good so the fact that I was hearing stuff from Randy Jackson like this was your comeback, I felt as an artist that today was a really good day for me.

The performance sounded great and you really connected to the song, but Keith did feel that way apparently!

Thank you, I feel I was really connected with the song today. I'm like dude, this is one of my best performances. I'm really proud of myself, really, really proud of myself.

Does it feel like redemption after last week?

Absolutely, I feel so relieved just knowing that the audience loved it. And 3 out of the 4 judges loved it. As an artist or even a contestant on the show, with anything you do it's hardest to sell yourself. To make yourself believe that you did good, so it felt good hearing all those positive comments even for myself. I was like Devin, you did really good tonight.

Apart from your performance, the one thing people will be talking about is Nicki thanking your penis. How did that feel and what does your penis have to say about that?

Oh my gosh when she was talking about the “pianist,” I was like… what? I do not know when she saw me playing my pianist. I don't know what to say. Last week you were late because of “traffic” this week you're talking about my penis? It's like… What is going to happen next week? I'm so scared. But she said “pianist,” so ha ha Fox, you can't say anything about that. Seriously though, who says that?

What are the guys at military school going to say about that?

Oh my gosh, I don't think you can see the pianist through these pants. I was just like oh my God.

How do you think your military school upbringing helps you in a competition like this, do you think you have a little advantage?

I love that I am different. I was never the strange type, but I always made sure I made it a point to not be like everybody else. The leopard shoes and a green suit, a military school, or Spanish lyrics on an English show, I just want to make sure that people see that I'm not like everybody else. But ultimately I think the military upbringing helps. Also in this industry there are a lot of people that, although they are nice, there are some people that are not so nice. And at military school everything is structured and everything is about respect. This is a competition and sometimes in competitions people get nasty. And here I love that, but it's so hard to see people go home. Tomorrow I'm going to be crying. If I'm not going home, but if I am going home I will be OK, I had a good run. But me and my pianist, we have done good. I made sure I played my keys right throughout the show.

Will you be the guy that's up at 5:30 a.m. with the whistle on the tour bus?

My God, no. I go to military school and I hate waking up early. I hate it. I was first to wake up this morning at 5:30 a.m. to work out and I must have thrown my phone, but I don’t even know where it is. I have two phones and I threw one of them and have no idea where it is. Just so I could sleep in.
