The 4 Reasons Why You Aren’t Losing Weight

You eat right and you exercise, but you just can’t seem to lose those last pesky pounds. Sound familiar? You’re not alone. Many women find themselves struggling with why the pounds aren’t melting off even though they’re seemingly doing everything right. But are you doing everything right? Dr. Jessica Bartfield, a nutrition and weight management specialist from Loyola University, says these are the four reasons why dieters find themselves not losing weight:

Are you underestimating how many calories you are consuming? Do you really know how many cals are in your daily grande mochachino? You might not want to, but it’s worth writing it down, along with everything else you eat throughout the day, so you can monitor your intake. And yes, drinks count when you’re calorie counting!

Are you overestimating how many calories you’re burning off? It’s terrific that you got your butt to the gym, but standing in the locker room kibitzing with friends does not count as cardio. Clock only the time you’re actually exercising your body, not your right to gossip.

Are you not eating often enough? Lord knows you’re probably too busy to enjoy a leisurely meal three times a day plus snacks, but if you wait too long between eating, you can actually slow down your metabolism, which is a big dieting no-no. Instead, try snacking every 3 to 4 hours during the day. Now this is something we can definitely do!

Are you not sleeping enough? Less than six hours of sleep can raise your levels of ghrelin, a hormone that stimulates appetite. Now all you need to do is figure out how to sleep more. That should be simple for us moms, right? (We kid, we kid.)
