Grey's Anatomy

Eric Dane Talks Life Post-Grey’s Anatomy, Where Mark and Lexie Would Be Now — Exclusive

After seven glorious seasons on Grey’s Anatomy, Mark Sloan’s untimely and heartbreaking death hit us like a ton of bricks. Just after losing the sadly-estranged love of his life, Lexie Grey, the artist formerly known as McSteamy fell into a coma, woke up for just long enough to say his goodbyes, and then passed away.

Though his death was months ago, we’re still mourning him, so when Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with portrayer Eric Dane at Disney Live! Mickey’s Music Festival on March 23 — where he was adorably dancing with his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and two kids — we had to find out about his post-Grey’s life, including his new TNT pilot, if he’s in touch with the cast (spoiler alert: he is!), and of course, where Mark and Lexie would be now if they hadn’t tragically passed.

Wetpaint Entertainment: How is life post-Grey’s? I know you just filmed a pilot, The Last Ship. How is that going?

Eric Dane: That’s good. We just actually handed in the pilot. I think the visual effects are done. I’ve seen it — it’s outstanding. I think it’s going to be one of the best hours of television when we launch it, which is yet to be determined. It’s a lot of fun. It was great working with Michael Bay and it’s going to be a fun hour of television.

Are you still in touch with anyone from the Grey’s cast?

Do you still watch the show?

I never watched the show. [Laughs] I never watched it! But I still stay in touch with Patrick [Dempsey] and Justin [Chambers] and you know, we were all... we spent a significant part of our lives together and we genuinely enjoyed each other, so of course we stay in touch.

Would you like to work with the cast again in some capacity? I know Chyler Leigh has a pilot about friends who survive a plane crash...

It’s called Holding Patterns on NBC.

Wow! That’s cool. I love working with those guys — I’d work with any of them again.

In an alternative universe, if Mark and Lexie had survived, where do you think they’d be? Married? Kids?

Yeah. They’d be in Cabo — stop practicing medicine and move to Mexico.

If only Shonda Rhimes would have listened to Eric’s suggestion! Oh, what could have been...

Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
