Jessica Sanchez On Her Return to the American Idol Stage: “I Was Free”
“Sweet” and “innocent” might come to mind when you think of American Idol’s season 11 runner-up Jessica Sanchez, but you might not completely right–at least on the innocent part. As we saw with her performance of “Tonight” with Ne-Yo on last Thursday’s results show, the beautiful singer is adding “edgy” to her repertoire.
When The Hollywood Reporter asked her about her upcoming two-episode arc on Glee (airing May 2 and May 9), the San Diego (Chula Vista) native said, “I’m all about risque — I love that stuff,” going on to say that’s what the “biz” sometimes entails.
“I love to be creative–that’s what the entertainment business is about. You have to be out there sometimes, and Glee is so colorful and unexpected with everything. I’m really excited to see what they have planned for those episodes.”
The early buzz is that she’ll be playing a “student from a rival school who’s this legendary diva powerhouse singer.” As THR points out, this might remind us of the Jessica from her Idol days, whereas her debut album has more of an urban, R&B dance-y feel to it.
“I did a lot of ballads on Idol to show my vocal technique. People don’t necessarily want to see you dancing and losing your breath on the show every week, so I’m glad I could show them this side of me.”
We definitely found the change in her onstage persona very intriguing. The American Idol alum definitely gave off a much sexier aura than when she was on the show.
Of her return to the Idol stage, Jessica said it felt “surreal and weird,” going on to say, “I wasn’t being judged this time. I felt like a bird. I was free and I could just sing.”
