The Rumors Were True About Ryan Seacrest and The Today Show
It seems that the rumors swirling and surfacing last year about Ryan Seacrest replacing Matt Lauer really were true.
While Matt was in discussions to make a move of his own to ABC in a gig that would have paired him with former colleague and friend Katie Couric, it appears that NBC initiated a Plan B that included luring the congenial American Idol host to the iconic NBC morning show. Which, in the wake of the Ann Curry debacle, might not have been a bad thing given Ryan's immense popularity and on-air charm.
According to the Mercury News, Matt "reportedly met with Disney CEO Bob Iger, who, like other ABC execs, was eager to unseat "Today" from its spot atop the ratings. ABC supposedly had some serious belief that it would happen."
When it was all said and done though, "Lauer used the negotiations to score a two-year, $25 million contract from NBC -- the richest-ever deal given to a morning show host" and also ceasing talks between the network and Ryan about taking over.
