He landed on Blake Shelton’s team after the country crooner complimented Christian’s imagination and creativity. But some viewers disagreed, noticing definite similarities between Christian’s acoustic rendition of the pop hit and YouTube sensation Noah Guthrie’s version, which came out in May 2012.
Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with Christian in a conference call the day after his audition aired to clear up any confusion.
“My version was influenced by a YouTube star by the name of Noah Guthrie,” Christian admitted. “I took his version and I covered his version. A lot of people might stay that I stole the version, but I didn’t cover LMFAO’s ‘Sexy and I Know It,’ I covered Noah Guthrie’s version of ‘Sexy and I Know It.’ That’s where the whole concept of the song came from, but I really took it into my own hands and really worked with the band and definitely made it my own.”
Christian’s not the only reality contestant to come under fire for covering Noah’s version. The X Factor UK’s series 9 winner, James Arthur, also performed the tune in Noah’s style. But if James was able to move on from the minor controversy and win the show, Christian shouldn’t be worried about the song affecting his time on The Voice.
As for Noah, his original video of the arrangement earned him an appearance on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno and more than 16.5 million views on YouTube. So, chances are, he’s probably not too upset that Christian covered him.
