American Idol Lazaro Arbos Says He Needs to Do Songs He Knows

Cuban-born Lazaro Arbos was thrilled to make the American Idol 2013 Top 10, but his journey during the live finals so far has been rather rocky. Harsh criticism from the judges have brought him to tears, and nasty comments on the Internet have made him lose confidence in his performances. In a press interview after the Top 10 performances show, Lazaro said the key to his future success on Idol is performing songs he knows, and being comfortable enough to let his confidence shine through.

What did you think of the judges’ critiques tonight?

I thought they were really on the spot and I wasn’t my best song, and I know I could have sung and performed it better.

What did you think of the comment that you were lacking confidence? Did you feel confident when you went onstage?

The main thing was that I wasn’t too comfortable with the song, so I think that the fact that I didn’t know the words really well kind of messed me up and I looked a bit scared. But I kept going, [thinking] don’t mess up the words.

What will be your strategy going forward to avoid that?

The next song that I choose if I come back will definitely be a song that I know 90,000 percent. And I have to know it and be comfortable for the confidence to come on.

You aren’t as familiar with US pop music. Is it harder to find songs that you know?

I love pop music. I would say I came to the USA when I was 9, so I’ve spent most of my life since 2001 [here] so I know most of pop.

Are the interviews an intimidating aspect of the show for you?

No, because I love to talk and I love interact with you guys. This is the easiest part. When I’m onstage and going in one spot and the world looking at you, four [reporters versus] the world? (Shrugs)

Did one girl stand out tonight?

I love Amber Holcomb. Her last performance of the night. We are really good friends. We get along really well, so I loved that she did so good and that they loved her.
