The Vampire Diaries Adds Second Spin-Off: Deputy Donovan

And here we thought we were lucky getting just one spin-off for The Vampire Diaries! In addition to The Originals, TV Patrol reports that executive producer Julie Plec is creating yet another show, this one focusing around Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig).

Tentatively titled Deputy Donovan, this second spin-off will follow the adventures of one of Mystic Falls’ few humans as he embarks on a new career.

“Matt really shone during his time helping Sheriff Forbes in Season 2,” says Julie. “It left an indelible mark on him.”

Unfortunately, Matt won’t be sticking around his hometown. With most of the crew graduating this year, the quarterback will realize his chance of survival will increase if he relocates far, far away from the supernatural soup that is Mystic Falls. Instead, he’ll head to Shady Pines, Minnesota, a small town with dark secrets of its own.

Matt will get a job with the local sheriff’s department, and he’ll solve cases in the sleepy burg. His experience with all things vampire, witch, and hybrid will definitely give him an edge over his colleagues.

Described as Supernatural meets Gilmore Girls, Matt will find himself juggling his work and a few potential love interests from the quirky town. Mindy is the local diner’s waitress who longs to move out of Shady Pines, while Sara is a college student who chose the town specifically for its unexplained events.

“It’s about time Matt got some love,” said Julie.

Normally reticent on Twitter — except for his musings on barns — Zach Roerig tweeted that he’s looking forward to the new project.

HAPPY APRIL FOOLS' DAY! This article is 100% false. There’s no spin-off for Matt in the works, so he better live through graduation day to see Season 5!
