What Did Pretty Little Liars Star Troian Bellisario Think of Spring Breakers?
Troian Bellisario (Spencer) had quite a lot to say about co-star Ashley Benson’s new film on Twitter. Spring Breakers, a gritty, in-your-face look at youth culture starring Ash, Vanessa Hudgens, and Selena Gomez has been making waves with critics for it scandalous portrayal of adolescent transgression for months, but was just released in America six weeks ago. What did Troian think of it?
“‘Spring Breakers,’ a specifically crafted exploitation of the day-glo drug fueled music video fantasy of youth pop culture. Suck it down MTV,” Troian announced on Twitter after viewing the film. In addition to encouragement for her co-star (“Way to kill it, Benz.”), Troian also lauded the film’s director, Harmony Korine, for his efforts.
“I loved it,” Troian tweeted. “Harmony had all the fun sticking our faces in the dark writhing underbelly of what we've all...been taught by MTV to believe is the ultimate party, the American dream. He took four women and allowed them to have the power.”
Troian elaborated on her viewing of the film as a message of empowerment for women: “I was terrified for the men around them. These girls weren't exploited. They ran the game. And wore the day-glo pants.”
Reactions to the film have been mixed. Some see it as putting a much-needed lens on a youth culture out of control, while others find it exploitative and dangerous, a glorification of that very youth culture. Troian seems to fall firmly in the former category. We wonder what Spencer, her opinionated and highly judgemental PLL alter ego would think?
